Solid Wood King Bedroom Sets
Your master bedroom furniture plays a vital part in creating a space to relax and unwind after a long day. Investing in an heirloom quality, King size bedroom set helps display your personal style and keeps your bedroom organized.
What furniture items does a King Bedroom Set include?
Most King size bedroom furniture sets include 5 pieces, the bed itself, 2 nightstands, a dresser and a chest of drawers. Other common additions include an armoire or wardrobe, a chiffonier or a lingerie chest.
What is the Best Wood for a Solid Wood King Bedroom Set?
Take the time to familiarize yourself with the various wood types available when ordering a wooden bedroom set. Not all solid wood is equally strong. Local craftsmen in our area use various types of American hardwoods. These include Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Elm, and Walnut.
Each of these wood species are tough and durable. The Janka wood hardness rating ranks them from Elm at 860 to Hickory at 1820. By contrast, soft woods like White Pine rank at 380. The harder the wood, the less likely your furniture will be to acquire knicks and dents.
That being said, all wood furniture can receive scratches. Moving to a new home or getting a new pet are common stress points for wooden furniture. Some stain colors will be more likely to show these scratches, even if you choose the hardest wood type we use, Hickory wood.
In general, dark stain colors even out the grain variation of the wood. The smooth, even color tones seem to highlight the occasional scratch in the wood.
Light stain colors often display more natural color variation of the wood. This variation often hides small scratches in the wood or finish.
Choosing the best wood for a King bedroom set is about personal preference. Browse our gallery online and see the difference for yourself. Oak, Hickory, and Elm have a prominent grain texture. Cherry and Maple have a smooth, even grain.
Bed Options for King Bedroom Sets
The focal point of your bedroom should be a beautiful, high-quality bed. Browse the gallery for a variety of bed styles including wood panel headboards, sleigh beds, upholstered beds and more. Every bed style is available in King or California King size. The number of panels in the headboard may vary from King to Queen size.
Bedroom Sets with King Size Storage Platform Beds
All bed styles have the option of adding drawer units under the bed. We offer 3 standard drawer layout options. All storage platform beds have a solid surface on top of the drawers. This eliminates the need for a box spring to support the mattress.
The first storage platform drawer layout option is two drawers on each side of the bed. We build them into a standard siderail, up off the floor. The footboard of the bed stays the same, no changes needed to accommodate this option.
The second option, like the first, is two drawers built into each siderail. The drawers in option #2 are extra deep, extending all the way to the floor. The footboard closes all the way to the floor to accommodate these drawers.
The third option for drawer layout in a king bed is two drawers in the footboard and one drawer on each side of the bed. This option works best with a low-profile footboard.
Drawers built into the siderails allow clearance for a standard depth nightstand on each side of the headboard.
A bed without drawers under the bed will have a series of horizontal wood slats under the bed for the box spring and mattress. The slats in a king bed have center posts that you can adjust if your floor is not quite level.
What Size is a King Bed?
A standard king-sized mattress is 76" wide x 80" long. A California king mattress is 72" wide x 84" long. Mattress height varies by manufacturer and model. We offer a line of mattresses made here in Ohio's Amish Country that range from about 10" - 14" thick.
The size of your King or California King mattress clearly defines the width and length of the bed itself. Request a low-profile footboard for your king-sized bed if you have a small master suite.
Pay attention to the style of the furniture. A king bed with large, rustic posts or heavily detailed trim work may end up 6 inches wider than a king bed with clean lines.
You can completely customize the rest of the furniture in an Amish king bedroom set. Amish craftsmen build each piece of furniture one at a time.
Bedside Tables in King Bedroom Sets
Standard nightstand sizes are approximately 24" wide x 18-20" deep. Scaling nightstand sizes down to 18" wide will instantly save valuable floor space. On the other hand, king sized beds with tall headboards benefit from expanding the nightstand to 28-30" wide if your bedroom allows for it.
Chests, Dressers, and Armoires
The chests, dressers and armoires for your king bedroom set include the same flexibility. Each piece can be custom sized to fit the wall space in your bedroom. Other custom options include changing the layout of doors and drawers for specific storage needs.
Custom King Bedroom Set Options
A new King bedroom set is a large purchase for your home. Avoid limiting your space to one size fits all bedroom furniture. Take the time to measure your walls and windows or doors. Mark the sizes of furniture on the floor with painters' tape to get an accurate visual of clearance in walkways.
After you get an idea of the best sizes for your solid wood bedroom furniture, find the style you love. Our gallery includes traditional Amish bedroom sets, mid-century modern styles, farmhouse bedroom sets and more. Remember- all styles can be King sized, and in any color you can imagine.
If you don't see the Amish bed style to match your vision, submit an image or sketch for a free quote on a custom King bedroom set. In addition to the quote, our team is happy to prepare a 3D sketch of the custom furniture for your review. Relax and know that we are all envisioning the same final product. The 3D print also allows you to double check all dimensions and details.

Care and Maintenance of a Solid Wood King Bedroom Set
With minimal care and cleaning, a solid wood king bedroom set will last for many years. The catalyzed conversion varnish we use to finish the furniture is waterproof and UV resistant. No need for polishes or wood conditioners, they will leave a residue on top of the finish.
Simply mix a mild soap and water. Wipe with a damp rag to keep it clean and free of dust.
Keep your King bedroom set in a controlled environment indoors. Solid wood will expand and contract with humidity and temperature changes. Inside the home, most likely you will never notice these minimal changes as the furniture adjusts to humidity. If you notice any of these issues with your new bedroom furniture, contact us at Dutch Craft Furniture.
