What are the Features of a Formal Dining Room Set?
Setting a formal dining room includes a few common factors, regardless of interior design style.
- Formal dining room furniture is a matching set.
- Formal tables and chairs are a solid wood color, not usually 2-tone.
- Formal dining chairs have high backs, often upholstered.
- Formal dining sets typically include a China cabinet or sideboard that adds storage and display.
- Formal dining tables include approximately 30 inches of space per chair. In contrast, relaxed family dining requires only 24 inches per chair.
What is the Best Wood for a Formal Dining Room Table?
Choosing a formal style, solid wood dining table offers many wood options. Our local Amish craftsmen use a variety of durable, American hardwoods. Choose your favorite from options including Maple, Oak, Cherry, Elm, Hickory and Walnut wood.
All hardwood options make a strong and durable formal dining table. Choosing the best wood means familiarizing yourself with the various grain textures and natural characteristics in the wood. For example, Cherry wood, a formal dining favorite, will include small pits in the wood. This is not a defect; this is a natural characteristic of Cherry wood.
Other considerations include the color variations in wood types and the stain colors that enhance or minimize that. Maple and Cherry wood have similar grain texture, subtle and smooth. The Janka wood hardness scale rates both at 950. With warm, medium to dark stains, many people cannot tell the difference between the two.
Light stain colors however, create a completely different final product on Cherry and Maple wood. The natural red undertones in Cherry wood shine through light stain colors and add a warmth not seen in Maple wood. Cherry wood also darkens over time and exposure to natural light, where Maple wood does not.
Hickory and White Oak wood are favorite wood options for many modern formal designs. The texture of the wood grain creates beautiful contrast to a formal table design. Choosing rustic grade wood is a great, money-saving option for Hickory or White Oak wood.
Rustic grade wood includes small knots, filled with a black epoxy. The small knots enhance the natural look of a wooden dining table and are often barely noticeable. Rustic grade wood is perfect when choosing a stain color like Cocoa Light and Asbury Brown.
A clear finish or light, blonde wood stains may appear jarring with the same small black knots in the wood. For blonde wood stains, you may prefer select grade wood to avoid any knots.

Traditional Formal Dining Sets
Traditional dining sets in a formal style often chose classic wood options like Cherry wood. The smooth, subtle grain texture of cherry wood creates a stunning formal dining table. In a dark stain, Cherry wood often showcases classic, Queen Anne design styles.
Traditional dining tables often feature ornate details like turned legs or elaborate pedestal bases. Our Shreveport Dining Table displays Maple wood with Rich Cherry stain for a timeless formal appeal. Upholstered chairs in a cream-colored leather lighten your dining room and are an easy to clean option.
Modern Formal Dining Room Sets
Many modern formal dining rooms today embrace a lighter wood tone, such as Cocoa Light, Sand and Willowbend. These light wood tones are beautiful on smooth wood grains like Maple wood or a rustic wood type like Hickory wood. Choosing a rustic wood like Hickory and White Oak adds a warm contrast to formal dining tables.
Walnut wood is another modern favorite. The natural wood tones in Walnut are a warm gray brown. Showcased in designs such as the Modern Farm Leg Dining Set, Walnut wood is strikingly beautiful.
Some formal dining sets include unexpected metal accents to contrast the wood tones. Farmhouse options like the Settler's Trestle Table make a bold statement in your dining room. The Settler's Trestle features a thick, 3" built-down tabletop and iron accents in the base.

Choosing Formal Dining Chairs
The classic formal dining chair is an upholstered style such as the Shreveport or Parson dining chair. Large, upholstered chairs such as the Wingback and Millbridge style are excellent options for contrasting captain's chairs.
Formal wood dining chairs are available in many styles and sizes. Generally, opt for a high-back style and sleek lines. Chairs such as the Eagle, Millcreek, Curlew and Austin are favorites for a formal dining room. Other options include the Brooke Dining Chair, a classic X-Back style.
Wooden dining chairs are available with an upholstered seat. If you often host dinners and encourage lingering around the table for conversation, guests may appreciate a padded seat. Choose from a wide array of leathers and easy to clean fabrics for your dining chairs.
