Farmhouse Dining Tables & Farmhouse Table and Chair Sets
Display your farmhouse style with the addition of an expandable solid wood farm table. Farmhouse interior design style ranges from modern to a rustic farmhouse look. Let's explore the wide range of options for farmhouse dining room sets from Dutch Craft Furniture.
Custom Farmhouse Table Options
Starting with the farm table, options include size of the table, number of people you are looking to seat, wood type, color, and more. Browse our gallery and start by finding a table base style you love. Is it a pedestal, trestle, or a table with legs at the corners? Keep in mind as you start looking, that some tables function better as large tables and others are perfect for small kitchens.
Farmhouse Dining Table Sizes
Now that you have a table style in mind, what size table do you need? Generally speaking, allow at least 3' around all sides of the table for comfortable traffic flow. Measure your dining room and pay attention to high traffic areas like walkways around the kitchen island.
All the farmhouse dining tables are available built as a solid, fixed top or with leaves to extend the table. Consider the size you want the table to be for every day. Then think about how many people you would like the table to seat for dinner parties and hosting the holidays.
A round dining table is available with one or two leaves, depending on the table style. By extending the table, you will likely add an extra seat or two. Round tables have limited self-storage for leaves. Typically, one folding, hinged leaf can store inside the table.
Rectangular farmhouse tables have more options for expanding with leaves. A standard table that is 44" wide x 72" long can store up to 4 leaves inside the top, depending on the style of the table. Additional leaves are available upon request for most table styles.
Choosing the Best Wood for a Farm Table
How can you know which wood is best for a farmhouse dining table? Our Amish craftsmen use a variety of local hardwoods for furniture. The most common wood types include Red or White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Walnut, Elm and Reclaimed Wood.
Each wood type has a distinct natural color and grain texture that affects the overall style of the table. Prices for the furniture also vary by wood type. Here is a quick overview of the difference in wood types.
Maple is extremely popular in farmhouse dining tables. The natural color of Maple wood is light. The smooth texture of the grain stains nicely in a wide range of colors. Light gray or tan stains like Sandy Point, DC Driftwood, Willowbend and Cocoa Light are stunning on Maple wood.
Darker stain colors like Gunsmoke, Brown Velvet, Rich Tobacco, Dark Knight and Ebony look smooth and rich on Maple wood.
Maple wood is the most common base option for tables in a 2-tone color combination. Many farmhouse tables feature a white painted base. The subtle grain texture provides a smooth finish when painted. We often pair painted Maple bases with tabletops that feature a more rustic wood grain like Oak or Hickory.
Cherry wood is similar to Maple except for the warm, reddish undertones in the wood. If you are looking for a warm, rich table color, Cherry has a beautiful character with small knots and pits in the wood.
Oak and Hickory have a prominent grain texture in the wood that adds a rustic appeal. Lighter stains enhance the rustic characteristics while darker stains like Ebony will minimize the grain texture. Oak is readily available and cost effective.
Walnut wood naturally has a beautiful grayish, brown color that we often seal with a clear finish. Occasionally we use a light gray or tan stain color, which evens out the color variation of the wood. Live edge tables are usually Walnut wood as well. The cost of Walnut wood is higher than most other wood options.
Elm wood has a feathery, unique grain texture that is best highlighted in a 2-tone table color. The grain shines in a medium dark stain like Michael's Cherry, paired with a black or white table base.
We use locally sourced reclaimed wood, usually a mix of Red and White Oak, for our barnwood tables. The rustic character of reclaimed wood is something only time can create!
After you find the wood type for your new farmhouse dining set, browse our gallery to find the perfect stain or paint color. We display many popular color combinations throughout our website. Contact us anytime to request stain samples to view in the comfort of your home.
What is the Finish on the Farmhouse Tables?
The finish we use for all furniture is a catalyzed conversion varnish. This finish is heat resistant to 220 degrees and guaranteed to be waterproof. Don't sweat it when your family forgets to use a coaster!
The finish is also UV resistant to protect against damage from sitting inside large windows. Please not that some wood types will lighten or darken over time. This is natural and the process is enhanced in situations receiving lots of natural light.
Farmhouse Plank Tabletop Details
Other style options for your farm table include the thickness of the tabletop. A standard dining room table with a smooth top is 1" thick, solid wood.
Many of the farmhouse tables feature lightly distressed plank tops. These plank tops range from 1" - 3" thick, depending on the table style. The plank tops that are 1"-1.5" thick are solid, pricing varying by top thickness.
The plank style tops that are 2.5"-3" thick feature a built down tabletop edge that mimics the look of heavy beams. Built-down tabletops are available with leaves. Most tables with built down tops can self-store a single 18" leaf.
Another option for built-down tops includes adding leaves to the ends of the table. The top features breadboard ends that extend on each side. Breadboard extension leaves are 18" wide and do not self-store in the table.
With all top thicknesses and wood types, plank tops are lightly distressed. Our craftsmen sand the corners and edges.
Farmhouse Chairs and Benches
Complete your dining set with the addition of matching dining chairs and benches. We offer a wide variety of chairs that are beautiful in a farmhouse color scheme. Many wood dining chairs feature steam bent slats in the back for maximum comfort.
Popular chairs for small tables include the Arlington, Fostoria, Oregon, and Kinglet. Larger dining sets pair well with the Western Ladderback, Millcreek, Urbana and Kowan chairs. For an added elegance, consider upholstered dining chairs at the ends of the table.
We often pair farmhouse trestle tables with matching benches. For some designs, the base of the table will match the base style of the bench. Other benches can complement by simply selecting the matching wood and color. We even offer expandable dining benches, especially popular with smaller tables.
