Choosing the Best Wood for an Armoire Closet

Our local Amish craftsmen offer solid wood armoires in a variety of American hardwood options. Wood options include Red and White Oak, Hickory, Cherry, Elm, Walnut and Maple. Each wood type is strong and durable, creating armoire cabinets that will stand the test of time. Choosing the best wood comes down to personal preference and budget.

Oak is a classic wood choice for Amish bedroom furniture, budget friendly and available in a wide range of stain colors. The prominent grain texture has a classic appeal, especially on light stain colors. Dark stain colors on Oak wood minimize the grain variation and add a modern touch. The DCF Mission collection features White Oak wood that is quarter sawn, in classic mission style.

Maple is perhaps the most common wood we use in bedroom furniture today. The grain of Maple is smooth and subtle, creating a rich, even color tone after staining. The natural color of Maple wood is light, allowing for a wide range of stain colors. Many armoires in our collection feature Maple wood.

Hickory wood is the hardest wood type we use in our Amish furniture. The Janka wood hardness scale rates it at 1820. The natural wood color and grain texture lends itself well to rustic bedroom styles.

Walnut wood has a medium dark, grayish-brown color tone. The natural color is a perfect complement to modern bedroom styles and mid-century designs. Our Hudson bedroom collection showcases Walnut wood beautifully.

Cherry wood is another well-known wood option in Amish bedroom furniture. Cherry wood has a similar grain texture to Maple, smooth and subtle. The natural reddish tones to Cherry wood add a rich, warm undertone in the finished color. The Carrington bedroom collection features Cherry wood, both in a traditional reddish stain and a sleek, Gunsmoke stain option.

Elm is a wood type many people are unfamiliar with. The unique, feathery grain texture is best showcased with a medium-dark stain such as Michael's Cherry and is stunning with black accents. Notice the Elm wood on the Heritage bedroom collection, with black rope trim.

Bedroom Wardrobe Sizes

Most armoires and wardrobes are 40"-44" wide x 75"-80" high. Taking advantage of the vertical height in your bedroom, the floor space required is minimal. Smaller, chiffonier armoires are 38" wide x 68" high, perfect for small bedrooms.

If you have a large bedroom space, consider a mule chest armoire. Mule chests are double armoires, ranging from 60"-72" wide x 75"-80" high. We often build mule chests as a 2-piece cabinet, making it easier to deliver and move.

Armoire Wardrobe Layout Options

Bedroom armoires add a ton of storage in your space. Standard layouts for armoires feature a set of double doors at the top, usually with adjustable wood shelves inside. The base of the armoire has 3-4 spacious drawers, depending on the style.

Mule chests have a 4-door cabinet at the top, with a standard 7-drawer dresser base cabinet. The top cabinets are an excellent way to store folded linens and seasonal bedding.

Chiffoniers are a chest and armoire hybrid. They often feature a single, mirrored door on the side with adjustable shelves. The rest of the cabinet has plenty of drawer space. Some chiffonier styles have a sliding door with inset drawers, allowing for a full-length mirror.

Solid Wood Armoire Wardrobe Construction

Our armoire collection showcases a variety of fine woodworking details. Notice the classic, post-construction of the DCF Mission Armoire and the face-frame construction of the Heritage Mule Chest. Door designs vary by bedroom style, featuring overlay doors, flush doors, raised panels, flat panels, and beaded face frames.

Likewise, drawers vary by bedroom style in the same way. You will notice drawers that are overlay, some are flush and inset, flat fronts, beveled fronts and more.

The sides of armoires may be flat and smooth. For added dimension, request paneled sides. Mix and match these small details to create the perfect wooden armoire wardrobe for your home.

Drawer Construction Details

In addition to offering options for drawer styles, we also have drawer slide options. Our standard drawer slide is a fully extending side mount drawer slide. Request an undermount, soft-closing drawer slide on any armoire drawer. These are especially perfect for drawers you open and close multiple times a day.

All armoire drawers will feature dovetailed drawer boxes. The dovetailed joints create the sturdiest drawer box. Notice the dovetailed joint is at the front and the back of each drawer. No shortcuts in quality!

Custom Bedroom Armoire Options

One of the best things about solid wood Amish furniture is the ability to customize each piece. In addition to choosing the wood and color, customize your furniture to add functionality. We often customize these solid wood armoires to add a clothes bar for hanging shirts or coats.

For armoires used for hanging clothes, consider resizing the top cabinet to add more space. Making the doors taller and removing a drawer in the base will allow hanging space for longer items such as dresses.

Hide the TV in your bedroom by removing the shelves inside the top cabinet and adding your TV inside. Add custom hinges to the cabinet doors to allow them to fold out of the way or slide inside the cabinet.

The base only of a standard wooden armoire is a perfect option for a child's bedroom. We often use versatile armoire bases as small changing tables in your child's nursery.
