The best table shape for small kitchens varies by the shape of your dining space. For areas that are narrow, or rectangle shaped, a rectangular table will maximize a small space. For square shaped dining areas, a small round kitchen table will fit perfectly.

These narrow kitchen tables are a wonderful option for 2 people as well. The table takes minimal floor space when pushed up against a wall. Setting up your small kitchen table with a bench on one side saves even more floor space. The bench can store underneath the table to maximize walkways.

How to Determine the Best Size Table for Your Small Kitchen

Start by measuring your dining area. This is easy if you have a separate dining room. Measure the length and width of the room. Avoid crowding any walkways, especially entrances into the room.

If your dining area is inside the kitchen, or part of an open floor plan, measuring can be a little bit harder. Follow the same guidelines as before, paying attention to any major walkways where traffic naturally flows through the space.

Pro tip: mark the shape and size of the table you are considering on the floor with painters' tape. Don't forget to account for the space your chairs or benches will occupy. When you push the chairs in around the table, the width and length of the table size increase by an additional 12 inches.

General rule of thumb requires a minimum of three feet walkway around the table. This will allow you space to walk behind someone seated at the table.

What Type of Table is Best for Small Kitchens?

The best type of table for a small kitchen depends on the table shape you choose. For rectangle tables, the best table style will have legs at the ends instead of a pedestal base. This allows the width of the table to be as narrow as 36" wide and four chairs will neatly fit around the table.

Round tables work better with a slim pedestal style base instead of legs. Bulky pedestals will prevent chairs from pushing in all the way around the table for small round tables.

Pedestal bases or legs at the corners can function with drop leaf tables, depending on the shape and number of chairs you need.
