Custom Kitchen Cabinets: Maple, Hickory, White Oak Cabinets
Every home should have beautiful kitchen cabinets that help you function and stay organized. Investing in custom cabinets makes the most of your space and creates a design for the way you live in your home. At Dutch Craft Furniture in Berlin Ohio, local cabinet makers build each kitchen from scratch.
Hardwood Options for Custom Kitchen Cabinets
As you prepare for a kitchen remodel or building your new home, invest in quality materials. This is especially true for your kitchen cabinets. Don't settle for less than solid wood kitchen cabinets. Our Amish cabinet makers offer a variety of solid American hardwoods.
Oak Cabinets
Solid oak cabinets have popular with homeowners for many years. Oak is tough, durable, and withstands the daily traffic our kitchens receive. At Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin, we offer both Red Oak and White Oak kitchen cabinets.
Red Oak vs White Oak Cabinets: What is the Difference?
Red oak and white oak wood have many similarities. Both are readily available throughout Ohio's forests. Both have a similar grain texture when straight sawn. Both are common options for wood cabinets.
What we often simply call Oak is usually Red Oak wood. Red Oak is far more common than White Oak. Wood prices vary over time, but Red Oak is always a budget friendly hardwood option. Red Oak is warmer in natural coloring than White Oak.
Red oak cabinets often have a traditional, country style. Light stain colors such as Fruitwood and Honey, paired with overlay doors enhance this design. Modern oak cabinets often opt for flush, inset doors and drawers with dark stain colors. Dark stains on Oak wood minimize the grain texture and color variation.
White Oak cabinets come in a wide range of prices and styles. White Oak wood, when straight sawn, has a similar grain texture to Red Oak. The natural color is lighter than Red Oak, though still a warm blonde wood tone. Straight sawn White Oak wood is perfect for farmhouse style kitchens, adding a warm wood texture to neutral spaces.
Quarter Sawn vs Rift Sawn White Oak Cabinets
White Oak wood is often quarter sawn or rift sawn. This refers to the way our woodworkers cut the rough lumber and the resulting angle at which we see the grain texture. When wood is quarter sawn or rift sawn, there is more waste in the raw lumber stage, creating a higher price tag.
Quarter sawn White Oak wood is a traditional choice for mission style kitchens. Quarter sawn White Oak often features warm, medium dark stain colors like Michael's Cherry or Asbury Brown.
Rift sawn White Oak cabinets are a favorite choice for mid-century modern kitchen styles. The texture of rift sawn wood has a uniform grain pattern, adding warmth with a minimalist appeal. Rift sawn White Oak often features a clear, natural finish or light stain color such as Sand or Willowbend.
Maple Kitchen Cabinets
Maple wood cabinets are a classic option for custom cabinetry. Like Oak, Maple wood is readily available in Ohio and an affordable hardwood. The smooth, subtle grain texture is a favorite for a wide range of colors and styles.
Light stains like Willowbend and Sandy Point are current favorites. Add a rich drama with a dark, neutral color like Brown Velvet, stunning with light walls and countertops. Natural Maple is light colored, making it the best choice for gray kitchen cabinets or painted cabinets.
Gray Kitchen Cabinets
When choosing gray stains for your kitchen cabinets, we recommend staying on the warm side of gray. A gray stain with tan or brown undertones looks natural and warm. Warm gray stains like Sandy Point and DC Driftwood on Maple wood blend well with existing wood tones you may have in your home.
White Shaker Cabinets
Shaker style cabinets are a timeless favorite choice for kitchens. Colors may vary with the trends, but Shaker cabinets are ageless.
What are Shaker Cabinets?
Shaker kitchen cabinets feature clean lines and minimal wood grain variation. Shaker cabinet doors traditionally have a square, recessed panel. Custom cabinet makers offer variations of the classic Shaker cabinet door with various profiles that add dimension.
One of the most common applications of Shaker cabinets is to paint them. The even grain texture of Maple wood creates a smooth painted finish. White shaker style kitchen cabinets brighten up a dark kitchen and blend with any home decor style.
At Dutch Craft Furniture, our Maple cabinets are available in any paint color. Our custom color program allows you to bring your favorite paint sample from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams colors.
Hickory Kitchen Cabinets
The character and texture of Hickory cabinets adds instant warmth to your kitchen. Hickory wood is available in Rustic grade or Select Grade lumber. Rustic Hickory cabinets will include small knots in the wood and greater color variation. Rustic grade wood has less waste, making it a price-friendly option.
Light stains on Hickory wood enhance the grain variation and rustic appeal. Medium to dark stain colors even out the color tone, adding formality to your kitchen designs.
Walnut Kitchen Cabinets
Walnut wood has a beautiful, dark natural color prized by many interior designers. Walnut kitchen cabinets are perfect for modern or mid-century home design.
Cherry Kitchen Cabinets
Like Oak and Maple wood, Cherry is a common wood option for Amish cabinet makers. Cherry wood has a natural reddish undertone that adds warmth to your overall color. Traditional Cherry cabinets often have a formal style, with dark stain colors. Add a modern feel to classic Cherry cabinetry with stain colors like Cocoa Light and Gunsmoke.
