Wooden Bunk Beds & Loft Beds
Maximize small bedroom space for kids with a solid wood bunk bed or loft bed. You can find a bunk bed design for any need. We offer classic options for young kids who share a room. Check out loft bed designs that offer storage and workspace.
Bunk Beds vs Loft Beds
The main difference between a bunk bed and a loft bed is the setup on the bottom. Both options make the most of vertical space with a raised bed on top. Bunk beds almost always have two beds. Loft beds may have two beds, or they may use the floor space for storage or workspace.
Both loft beds and bunk beds include a safety rail on top to reduce the risk of falling.
Size Options for Wooden Bunk Beds
Standard bunk beds for kids start with a twin-size mattress on the top bunk and a twin-size mattress on the bottom bunk. This classic design requires minimal floor space while offering independent beds for two children. We offer several traditional headboard styles in this layout.
Another common size option is the twin over full bunk bed. The full-size bottom bunk provides room for two kids to share the sleeping space with a third child in the twin bed on top. The full bed allows a growing child more room.
Take advantage of large bedrooms with triple bunk beds or even custom layouts that will sleep 4-6 children. Setup your vacation home with a bunk room that offers sleeping for all the little ones. Matching twin over twin bunk beds with a shared set of steps in the middle makes the most of a long wall.
Loft Bed Layout Options
Choosing a loft bed requires a bit more floor space, as the overall size is usually larger than bunk beds. Popular layout options include a loft bed with desk, which sets up a private homework station under the loft. Full size loft beds often have room for a small desk, bookshelf and desk chair in the space.
Many designs feature a loft bed with storage, choose a chest of drawers or bookcases designed into the loft base. The Jordan Twin Over Full Size Loft Bed is a classic design that includes a spacious 6-drawer chest for storage. Our Cambria Twin Loft Bed packs a dresser, a bookcase and a bed into a small floor space.
Ladders vs Steps for Bunk and Loft Beds
Both loft beds and bunk beds are available with your choice of ladder or step unit. Ladders are low profile and more affordable. Step units often include storage drawers and may reduce the risk of falling for small children.
Wood and Color Options for Amish Bunk Beds
Amish furniture is never mass produced. The attention to detail makes it easy to create the design you envision. We offer a wide range of stain or paint colors for our solid American hardwoods. Favorite wood types include Oak and Maple.
Oak wood has a prominent grain texture with a rustic appeal. Classic wood stains like Fruitwood and Michael's Cherry have a traditional feel on Oak wood. Modern stain colors like Ebony or Gunsmoke minimize the grain variation, adding a contemporary edge to Oak.
Maple wood has a smooth grain texture and is available in a wide range of stain colors. The even texture of the grain is perfect for a smooth painted finish as well. In addition to the paint colors shown online, we encourage you to submit your favorite paint sample for us to match.
Other common American hardwoods used for bedroom furniture include Cherry, Elm, Hickory and Walnut wood. Browse our color gallery online for a complete list of wood and stain options available. Contact us to request wood samples to make your final color choice in the comfort of your own home.
Common Mattress Sizes for Bunk Beds
Twin size mattresses are 38" wide x 75" long. Full size mattresses 54" wide x 75" long. Other size options like Twin XL, Full XL and Queen are also available on request. As you measure your space, remember to allow extra inches for the wooden bed frame and clearance for the steps or ladder.
