Turned Leg Dining Tables, Shaker Leg, Square Leg & More
Choosing a solid wood turned leg table or a shaker leg table adds style and functionality to your kitchen or dining room. Here at Dutch Craft Furniture, we understand that your dining table has to work hard and look good. Local craftsmen build every table one at a time here in Ohio's Amish Country. This attention to detail allows for complete customization of your table including size, style, wood, and color.
Choosing the Best Dining Table with Turned Legs
As you browse through the extensive gallery of spindle leg dining table options, notice small details. Explore the options to find the best, turned leg dining table for your space. Turned leg tables are available with various leg profiles and with various leg sizes. The same profile on different leg sizes looks completely different.
For example, the Farm Leg is a classic turned leg dining table style. The Modern Farm Leg Table has 3.5" Farm Legs. The 3.5" is the diameter of the square at the top of the table legs, where it attaches to the tabletop. The Modern Farm Leg looks sleek and contemporary with the slim turned legs.
The Settler's Farm Leg is the same profile, using a 4" square. The half inch bigger square makes a major difference in the style of the table. The Settler's Farm Leg is an excellent choice for drawing attention to a two-tone finish, like a wood table with white legs. Wooden dining tables with black legs are another common design with the 4" turned Farm Leg.
The Settler's 4" Farm Leg is also a great option for formal tables for 8-10 people or more, shown on the Shreveport table style. The extra-long tabletop looks proportional with the slightly larger table legs. Notice how the large table with a single, dark Cherry color and upholstered dining chairs has a completely formal feel.
Finally, consider a chunky leg dining table by adding 5" farm table legs, shown on the Arcadia Dining Table. The 5" farm leg style is best suited for medium to large dining tables, at least 42 inches wide by 66" long. The large, 5" legs are perfect for highlighting a rustic, multi-step finish like Coastal White on Red Oak wood.
Square Leg Dining Tables
Like the turned legs, the size of your square legs is an important style choice. Choose 3" square legs on smaller kitchen tables and larger 4" furniture legs on long tables or rustic, reclaimed styles.
Consider a Solid Wood Dining Table with Black Legs
As you browse the dining table styles, you will see many beautiful solid wood dining tables with black legs. This is a timeless furniture style trend that blends well into many homes without completely renovating the kitchen. Notice table tops in Maple, Cherry, Elm, Oak, Hickory and Walnut in a wide range of finish colors, all paired with black table legs.
One of our favorite solid wood top tables with shaker legs is the Classic Shaker table. This 42x66 dining table with black legs in Brown Maple and an Elm wood top is a perennial favorite. Complete the Shaker furniture set with a matching Biltmore Corner Hutch and Fostoria dining chairs.
Many people shopping for a new dining table already have some existing wood tones in their kitchen or dining room. From kitchen cabinets and base trim to wood flooring, it's important to choose wooden dining tables that look good with your existing wood tones. For this reason, black table legs are a classic option. The black is neutral and looks good with any wood colors.
When you choose a table with black legs, you can choose a tabletop in a contrasting color. Choose a top in a similar shade to your floors or cabinets, however, avoid trying to match exactly. A mix of wood tones often look beautiful together, as long as you avoid mixing warm and cool undertones.
Elm wood tabletops in Michael's Cherry stain are an Amish Country favorite with black table legs. Elm wood has an exotic, feathery grain texture that brings a myriad of shades after stain application. Smooth, black Maple wood table legs allow the Elm tabletop to shine. The variety of color tones in the texture of Elm makes it easy to complement almost any existing wood.
Extendable Dining Tables with Legs at the Corners
All solid wood tables with legs at the corners are available with a fixed top or extendable with leaves. When you choose an extendable table, you add versatility to your dining area. Here are some considerations for extendable leg dining tables.
- Leaves store inside the tabletop. General rule of thumb is that a table must be 12 inches longer than the width of the table for self-storing leaves. Tables 36" wide can usually store 2 leaves. Tables 42 inches wide or larger can self-store 4 leaves.
- Tables that extend longer than 84" will have an extra support leg in the center of the table. The fifth leg is always there, even when the table is not extended. The extra leg will match the style of your table.
- Dining tables have gear slides to extend the table. This gear slide makes it easy to open the table when adding leaves.
- Generally, each leaf is 12 inches wide. Custom size leaves are available upon request.
- Add as many leaves as your space allows, even 10-12 leaves or more. Discuss the options of an extra-long table with our team. We will help you determine the minimum size required to accommodate the track for an extra-long table. Extra support legs will be added as necessary to support the table.
- Leaves will have the skirt (also called apron) on the bottom of the leaf as table storage allows. If you prefer all your table leaves to have the apron, request to our sales team at the time of the order.
- Fixed tabletops will have the wood grain running lengthwise in your table. Extendable tables will have the grain running widthwise when they extend from the center.
Leg Dining Room Tables vs Pedestal or Trestles
Consider the pros and cons of choosing a table with legs at the corners vs a pedestal or trestle table.
Pros of a Dining Table with Legs vs Pedestal or Trestle:
- Tables with simple leg styles are often more affordable than detailed pedestal or trestle bases.
- Leg tables make it easy for chairs to fit neatly underneath a narrow table without bumping a bulky trestle.
- Leg tables often have more size flexibility, easily extending from 4-10 people, while remaining sturdy and strong.
Cons of a Dining Table with Legs vs Pedestal or Trestle:
- The dining table legs at the corners of a table make it difficult to add extra chairs at the ends of the table.
- Leg tables usually require two people when extending the table, while pedestals are easier to extend by yourself.
- Benches may be harder to situate with table legs at the corners.
