FAQs for Round Extendable Dining Tables
Standard size options for a solid wood round dining table include 36", 42", 44", 48", 54", 60", 66" and 72" round. Available sizes vary by pedestal base style to maintain strength and functionality.
All of our round dining tables have the option of being built as a solid, fixed top or with leaves to extend the table.
Yes! Leaves for round dining tables are hinged and fold in half to store inside the tabletop. Please note that most round tables will only self-store 1 leaf inside the table.
A round dining table must be 66" round or larger to comfortably seat 6 people. If you only need to seat 6 people when the table is extended, you can choose a 48" round table with a leaf. This becomes a 48"x60" oval when it is extended and easily seats 6 people as well. Our team is happy to guide you in choosing the best pedestal style to ensure that 6 chairs will fit neatly around the base.
Round dining tables are a great option for small kitchens or dining rooms that are square. A 10'x10' dining area is plenty of room for a 48" round table, comfortably seating 4 people. If your small dining room is rectangular shaped, a round table may not be the best option. An 8' wide x 12' long dining room with a 48" round table will only allow 2' walkway around the table widthwise in the 8'. Space will be very tight to walk behind someone is seated at the table.
You can seat 8 people comfortably at a round dining table 72" or larger. If you only need to seat 8 people for special occasions when the table is extended, you can select a 60" round with a leaf. This becomes a 60" x 72" oval shaped table and seats 8 people comfortably.
If your dining room is square, or close to it, round tables are a wonderful option. For dining areas that are long and narrow, a rectangle table may fit better.
Eliminate the guesswork of choosing the perfect size table for your dining room. Our team is happy to create a 3D drawing of your space upon request, making it easy to visualize the walkways and potential problem areas. Confirm at a glance the size and style look proportional in your space and fit your design vision.
The Albany Round Extending Dining Table is our favorite style for a large round table. The sturdy, craftsman style base easily supports a heavy, solid wood tabletop up to 78" inches wide. You can even add a leaf or two without compromising the strength and stability of the table. *Due to the size of the Albany base, we do not recommend it for round tables smaller than 54".
We carefully test each round table style in different sizes to ensure stability when the table is extended. All pedestal tables that are extended with leaves will safely allow some movement when weight is applied to the ends of the table. For specific size options that are not shown on our site, please contact a member of our team.
A round dining table for 4 people should be a minimum of 42"-48" round. Choose a small dining chair style to ensure fitting neatly around the table. For more spacious seating, opt for a 50"-54" round dining table for 4 people.
Your dining room should be at least 10'x10' to fit a 48" round dining table. This allows 3' all the way around the table for walkways, the minimum required to walk behind someone seated at the table.
Yes! All round tables can be made to order in counter height. Counter height tables are 36" high. Accompanying bar chairs and stools should have a 24" seat height for comfortable seating.
Browse our gallery and choose from a variety of beautiful pedestal bases that function well with round tabletops. Please note that the size options will vary depending on the base style to maintain strength and durability.
The standard rule of thumb recommends choosing a rug 4'-6' larger than your table. If you choose a 60" round table, then finding a rug that is 9'-11' round will allow 2'-3' for the chairs on each side of the table to fit on the rug.
Add an easy decoration to your round table by finding a wooden tray in complementing size and color. Trays allow you to display seasonal items and florals, while keeping small decorative pieces contained to easily remove the centerpiece when seated at the table for dinner.

Expandable Solid Wood Round Tables
One of the key features of round tables is the ability to extend the table with leaves. Our round extendable dining tables feature gear driven slides inside the tabletop. These gear slides make it easy to extend the table by yourself, no help required!
How do expandable round dining tables work? A round table has room inside the top to self-store one leaf. The leaf hinges and folds in half. Please note- there is no apron on the leaves for round tables.
The leaf for round tables can be 12-18" wide, depending on the size of the table. A 60 inch round dining table extended with a 12" leaf becomes a 60x72 oval shaped table.
Round dining tables are also available as solid tops, without any leaves. A 48" round dining table is standard for 4 people. Mid-size tables typically range from 54" to 60", while customers can order large round tables that are 72" to 78" wide.
Custom Round Tables
Amish furniture is never mass produced. Local artisans make each round dining table with leaf one at a time with precision and attention to detail. This allows complete customization on every step of the way.
Our gallery showcases a collection of round table styles, but that is only the beginning. Mix and match any base styles, order custom sizes, and then specify your hardwood type and stain or paint color.
Some classic round tables include the Ellington or the Traditional style. These turned pedestal bases are perfect as a round dining table set for 4.
Modern Round Dining Tables
Modern round dining table options include the Global, Albany, Mid Century Modern, and Farmhouse round tables. Other options include locally welded metal bases, which add an industrial flair when paired with a solid wood tabletop.
Large Round Dining Tables
The Albany is our favorite round dining table for 8 people. The sturdy craftsman style is perfect for sizes up to 78" wide, even supporting 1-2 leaves when hosting a dinner party. We do not recommend this style any smaller than a 60" round dining table.
What size Round Table do you Need?
One of the most common concerns we hear is determining what size round table will fit best. Our design team can help alleviate these worries by creating a 3D drawing of your dining room. Come prepared to shop by measuring your space, including doors, windows, and existing furniture and cabinets.
The blueprint will help you envision the space, complete with dimensions when dining chairs are setup around the table. This is a common mistake when purchasing dining room furniture. Your table may fit just fine, but space is tight when people are sitting around it. See at a glance what size area rug you may need for the table.
Another way the 3D drawing helps is by determining the size of buffet or wine server needed. A large wall in a dining room with high ceilings may need a large buffet to look proportionate. Seeing the round dining set in your space helps you see whether that buffet should be 18" deep to allow walkways to be comfortable, or if 24" will fit just fine.
