Solid Wood Dining Room Sets with Bench
Considering a dining table with bench and chairs? Look no further than Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin. Our local Amish craftsmen offer a variety of options for a kitchen table with bench and chairs. Let's explore the options and consider the pros and cons of a table and bench set.
Pros of a Dining Room Table Set with Bench
- Dining room sets with a bench are great for families with little kids. Three or four small children fit on a bench and take the same space as two chairs.
- Benches appear less bulky than chairs around a dining table. This is especially true in small dining rooms as you can push the bench under the table when not in use.
- A bench is not as formal as chairs. Create a relaxed, family atmosphere in your dining room with the addition of a bench on one side of the table.
- Benches make it easier to add another person at the table.
Cons of a Dining Table Set with a Bench
- Benches are not ideal for older people. Older people often prefer the back support of a chair rather than a bench for dinner.
- Extra-long benches are less functional. When 3-4 adults are sitting on a bench, it may be difficult for the ones seated in the middle to get up easily.
- Benches are less flexible with tabletop shapes. Oval and round tables do not function well with a bench.
Many people opt for a combination of dining chairs and a bench with their table. This creates a perfect combination of beauty and functionality.
What is the Ideal Size for a Dining Room Table Set with Bench?
The most common size for a dining room table set with a bench ranges from 60 inches to 84 inches long. We recommend keeping the bench approximately 12 inches shorter than the length of the table. This allows the bench to sit neatly underneath the table when not in use.
A 60-inch table with a 48-inch bench is comfortable for two adults to sit on the bench. A bench that is smaller than 48 inches may fit several small children, but not more than one adult.
We pair tables that are 84 inches long with a 72-inch bench. 72-inch benches comfortably seat three adults. Benches that are longer than 72 inches often become less functional at the table.
Small Kitchen Table Sets with a Bench
Our classic 36-inch x 48-inch kitchen tables with legs at the corners are perfect for small dining areas. These tables are a favorite option for empty nesters or young couples just starting out. A small, 48-inch table will fit 4 chairs or 3 chairs and a bench.
The bench fits neatly between the table legs and hides underneath, out of the way. This saves space in a small kitchen and allows the table to push up against the wall. When the kids come home for dinner, simply pull the table and bench away from the wall. Bonus points if you choose the extendable table and extendable bench that will easily seat 6-8 people!
Farmhouse Tables with Benches
Farmhouse dining tables are the most common table style to pair with a bench. Farmhouse interior design celebrates comfortable, relaxed spaces to encourage family dinners. Large farm tables are typically rectangular, perfect for pairing with a bench.
Farmhouse tables often feature plank style tabletops. All benches are available with matching plank seats, creating a beautiful complement. Lightly distressed plank seats on benches are great for hiding scratches in the wood that may occur from jeans with rivets on back pockets.
Trestle Tables with Benches
The design of trestle tables features a sturdy center table base, rather than legs at the corners of the table. This makes sitting at a bench easier to maneuver than a leg table. At Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin, we offer benches with base styles to match the trestle base of the table.
The classic design of the Settler's Trestle Table is a favorite for matching benches. The simple, angled base creates a sturdy, affordable bench that pairs with many trestle tables. We offer it with the iron turnbuckle or without.
Detailed pedestal and trestle tables like the Alexandria Dining Table also feature beautiful matching benches. The iron accents are stunning with the intricate pedestals.
Save money on a dining set by selecting a Shaker Bench style to pair with any dining table. The Hillside Dining Collection features a 72-inch Shaker bench with simple, tapered legs. The profile of the Shaker bench base matches the style of most chair bases.
Extendable Benches
One way to add functionality to your dining set is with the addition of an extendable bench. All bench styles are available with leaves, just like the table. No more running around looking for extra chairs when you extend the table. Simply add the extra leaves to your bench.
Extendable benches will include an extra support in the center. This keeps the bench strong and solid, even when fully extended. Benches are available with one, two, three or four leaves to double in total length.
Wood & Color Options for a Dining Table Set with Bench
Solid wood dining sets are available in your choice of wood and stain or paint. Local artisans offer American hardwood options such as Red or White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Elm, and Walnut wood. All wood species are available as natural wood or with a variety of wood stains.
Oak wood is a classic Amish dining furniture option. The Oak trees are common throughout Ohio's forests, often making it the most affordable option. Red Oak is more common in country style homes, with a prominent grain texture and warm, natural blonde color.
White Oak is a bit harder than Red Oak, with a lighter color tone. The grain has a similar texture when straight sawn. White Oak is often quarter sawn or rift sawn, referring to the angle of the cut in the lumber mill. The angle of the cut creates a dramatically different view of the grain texture.
Quarter sawn and rift sawn White Oak wood has more waste in the lumber mill, resulting in a higher price tag than straight sawn White Oak wood. Mid-century modern dining furniture is common in rift sawn White Oak. The cut of the wood is perfect for minimalist designs.
Quarter sawn White Oak is a classic mission style wood choice. Dining sets like the Heavy Mission Dining Set display quarter sawn White Oak wood with Michael's Cherry stain.
Both straight sawn and quarter sawn White Oak wood is available as a rustic grade or select grade wood. Rustic grade will include boards that have small knots in the wood, filled with a black epoxy to create a smooth finish.
Cherry and Maple wood have a smooth, subtle grain texture. The main difference between these two is the natural wood color. Maple is light colored with darker, brownish streaks. Cherry wood has a natural reddish tone.
Light stain colors will appear warmer on Cherry wood than on Maple wood. We recommend Maple wood for light gray or tan wood-stained tabletops. We also recommend Maple wood for table and bench styles with a black or white painted finish. The even grain creates a smooth painted finish.
The smooth grain texture of Maple wood is a perfect complement to the rustic texture of Oak or Hickory. Dining sets like the Farmhouse Trestle Set feature Maple wood bases with White Oak tabletop and seats.
Hickory is the hardest wood option available, perfect for dining table sets with a bench. The Janka wood hardness scale rates it at 1820. The rustic grain texture and color variation of Hickory wood are great for hiding scratches or dents in the wood.
Elm is a lesser-known wood option for Amish furniture. The feathery grain texture of Elm wood gives it an exotic appeal, especially when paired with a smooth black table base.
Walnut wood is a classic option for modern and mid-century furniture styles. The natural color of Walnut wood is a rich, brown with grayish undertones. Most Walnut dining sets feature a clear finish, no wood stain, to preserve the natural beauty of the wood.
Custom Dining Room Table Set with Bench Options

Our craftsmen encourage custom designs. Find inspiration on social media or create a simple sketch of your vision and submit it for a price quote. Include details like dimensions and preferred wood type. Tell us how many people you would like to seat, both for everyday and when extended with leaves.
Along with a quote, our team is happy to provide a 3D visual blueprint of the custom dining set for your review. This ensures that we understand and share the final vision. It also allows you to double check dimensions and make sure that chairs and benches will fit as you anticipate.
Include your overall room dimensions with doorways, windows, and other features in your dining room. This allows us to add these details into your blueprint and lets you see how the dining set will fit your space. Double check high traffic walkways to avoid crowding the space.
Please note that some designs are not compatible with solid wood. Solid wood expands and contracts with humidity changes throughout the year. Our craftsmen construct dining table sets accordingly. For more information about the characteristics of solid wood, please contact us at Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin.
