Bases for Round Extendable Dining Tables
Round tables with extension leaves require sturdy pedestal bases that accommodate the additional length without becoming wobbly. At the same time, the table base for a round table should allow chairs to fit neatly without bumping into the base.
Start by considering the size of the round table without the leaf. Small round tables that are 36-42 inches wide need a slim pedestal base that is about 6 inches in diameter. This allows chairs to fit comfortably around the table. The 6-inch diameter base is sturdy enough to add one leaf to the tabletop.
Round dining table bases for tops 44 - 60 inches wide have more style options. A classic single pedestal in the middle can be 8 inches wide, keeping the larger table strong and sturdy. The thicker pedestal often will accommodate up to two added leaves.
Many base styles for medium sized round tables have a wider footprint at the top and bottom of the pedestal. This design allows the pedestal to be narrow in the middle, around 18" off the floor. That is exactly the height of chair seats, making it easier to fit the chairs around slimmest part of the base. Some of our favorite round table bases such as the Carlisle, Newport, and Farmhouse style follow this pattern.
The pedestal bases for large round tables are wider overall. Most chair seats are only around 18 inches deep. Round tabletops 66 inches or larger no longer have to worry about chairs hitting the base. Pedestal styles such as the Albany or Global base have a wide footprint, perfect for stabilizing large round tables.
The Albany pedestal style is our top recommendation for large round extendable dining tables. The craftsman style construction features sturdy, angled posts to support a large tabletop. Adding 2 leaves will allow seating for 10-12 people.
Base Options for Round Tables without Leaves
The pedestal size may be slimmer for round tables that do not extend with leaves. 6-inch diameter bases provide plenty of strength for 48-inch tabletops. This allows extra room around the base for chairs to fit.
Material Options for Round Table Bases
Solid Hardwood Bases for Round Tables
Amish craftsmen use solid wood for our table bases. Every table style is available in your choice of wood type. Local hardwood options include Red or White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Elm, Hickory and Walnut wood. Each wood is strong and durable, choose according to personal style preference.
Red Oak, Elm, and Hickory wood have a prominent grain texture that complements traditional and rustic styles with warm wood tones. The smooth, subtle grain texture of Cherry wood is perfect for formal dining areas. A grayish-brown natural color makes Walnut wood a sleek choice for modern round tables.
White Oak is a stunning choice for mid-century modern round tables. Simple pedestal bases in light, natural wood tones complement the minimalist interior design style.
Painted Wood Bases for Round Tables
Our painted wooden table bases are solid hardwood as well. Maple wood is our top recommendation for black or white painted table bases. The subtle grain texture creates a smooth painted finish. Create a modern round table by choosing a sleek painted table base and smooth natural wood tabletop.
Showcase your farmhouse style by choosing a multi-step paint and glaze finish on a Maple or Oak table base. Finish the table with a thick, plank style tabletop in your choice of wood and stain color.
Metal Bases for Round Tables
Talented local crafters also build powder coated metal bases for round dining tables. The use of a metal base adds an industrial feel to rustic tabletops. Create a stunning focal point by choosing a natural Walnut wood top with a black metal table base. Metal bases are available in various sizes and styles to accommodate fixed tabletops or those with extension leaves.
