9 Different Styles of Bedframes Explained
Is it time for some new bedroom furniture? Maybe you are getting ready to furnish a guest room or get rid of the baby crib and set up a bed that will grow with your child. No matter the situation, the bed is the focal point of a bedroom. Explore the different types of beds so you can feel confident in selecting the perfect one for your space.
Sleigh Beds
Sleigh beds are a classic option in Amish furniture. These beds feature a headboard and footboard curved outward like a sleigh. Many traditional styles include ornate carvings and elaborate trim work. Today, many sleigh bed styles are sleek and modern.
Pair a sleigh headboard with a low footboard and storage drawers built into the side rails as a space saving option in small bedrooms.
Wood Panel Beds
Wood panel beds are another broad style category in Amish beds. The solid hardwood panels may be square or arched at the top. For mission styles, many panels will be flat and inset. Beveled or raised panels add dimension and a touch of formality.
Amish craftsmen use solid wood like Oak, Cherry, Hickory, Walnut, or Maple for the panels as well as the rest of the bed.
Solid wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes in your home. Rubber bumpers are added to the panels to help them expand and contract without damaging the wood. This prevents cracking. The bumpers absorb the pressure and protect the wood.
Storage Headboards
Perhaps the most common storage headboard is the classic bookcase bed. Available for any size bedroom, small spaces benefit as this eliminates the need for a bedside table. Choose from full- or queen-sized beds with a simple shelf headboard, to elaborate king wall units spanning 10' or more.
Common storage headboard options include doors and drawers, mirrors, lights, outlets for charging devices overnight, and hidden pistol drawers.
Upholstered Beds
Add softness and style to your bedroom with an upholstered bed frame. This can be a simple fabric panel inserted in a wooden headboard. It can also be a tall, arched headboard with tufted upholstery and nail head trim. Pair upholstered headboards with wooden drawer unit platforms to add storage.
Choose from the many fabric options for upholstered beds. Light colored, neutral fabrics complement any interior design style. We recommend using a heavy-duty upholstery fabric that you can clean with mild soap and water.
Bed with Storage Underneath
All types of bed frames are available as a storage platform bed. Choose the headboard style you prefer, upholstered, sleigh headboard, wood panels, or even bookcase headboards. Then choose the style of storage platform. We offer three types of storage platforms for your convenience, all with four drawers.
The first type is our siderail drawer unit, two drawers on each side, built into the standard height siderail. These drawers sit up off the floor, barely noticeable when the bed is made. These drawers are available with a low footboard or a standard height footboard.
Next is our siderail and footboard drawer unit combo, exactly like it sounds. Two drawers are built into the footboard and one on each side of the bed. This unit is only available with a low footboard.
Finally, our third storage platform is the deep to floor, siderail drawer unit. Again, four drawers are built into the siderails, but this option maximizes the storage space under your bed. The drawers extend all the way to the floor, giving you much deeper drawer depth.
All storage platforms have a solid surface on top, eliminating the need for a box spring. The mattress is fully supported by the storage platform.
Murphy Beds
Murphy beds are a wonderful option for overnight guests. If you lack the space for a dedicated guest bedroom, consider a Murphy bed in your family room or home office. This hidden bed adds sleep space when you need it, but functions as a storage cabinet or bookcases for everyday use.
Trundle Beds
Another wonderful option for overnight guests is trundle beds. This is especially functional in children's bedrooms when friends sleep over. You can customize all bed styles to accommodate a trundle underneath.
Many day beds offer a trundle option as well, serving as a sofa in the family room for everyday use.
Headboard Only
In some bedrooms, you may want a headboard only, with no footboard at all. Small bedrooms benefit from the extra inches gained by not having a footboard. Every bed style is available as a headboard only.
Here are a few things to consider when selecting only a headboard. The mattress and box spring will need some kind of support, perhaps a metal bed frame. Solid wood headboards are heavy. Depending on the height of the headboard you choose, it will need to be attached to the wall for stability.
Canopy Beds
Create a beautiful focal point in a master bedroom with a canopy bed. The added height of the canopy is perfect in large bedrooms with high ceilings. Traditional canopy styles include heavily carved posts and detailed trim work. Modern styles today are often sleek and minimalist.
