Quality Amish Made Low Wood Dressers

Organize all your clothes or shoes with a horizontal wood dresser from Dutch Craft Furniture. These bedroom storage units come in different sizes and storage options. Most low dressers have a seven drawer layout, with 4 large drawers and 3 smaller ones across the top. The 7 drawer layout is perfect for most storage needs.

The four large drawers are ideal for storing bulkier clothing including sweaters, pants or seasonal items. The top drawers store socks and other smaller items to keep the dresser top clutter free. The drawer dimensions vary slightly by dresser style.

Modern low dresser styles may feature a 6-drawer layout. The symmetry of 6 large drawers adds a sleek feel to wooden dressers. The Carrington dresser style in solid Cherry wood has a modern feel with this layout.

Low Dresser vs Tall Dresser Sizes

All Amish dresser styles are available as low dressers or tall dressers, sometimes called high dressers. Generally speaking, low dressers are approximately 36" high compared to tall dressers at 45" high. Tall dressers have the same horizontal layout, with an extra 2 deep drawers at the bottom for a total of 9 drawers.

The width and depth of low dressers range slightly by style. Most dressers are 20-22" deep and 56-66" wide. High dressers have the same width and depth. Custom sizes are available upon request for all dresser styles.

So how should you determine if a high dresser or low dresser works better in your bedroom? More storage is not always better. Take some time to access the space and your storage needs. Tape out the dimensions on the wall or floor to avoid overwhelming a small bedroom.

We often recommend low dressers for children's bedrooms. The height is perfect to start in the nursery as a changing table, and grows into a timeless storage piece. Removable changing table trays are available with all dresser styles. The low profile is proportional to other children's furniture items including smaller beds and bookcases.

Mirror Options for a Solid Real Wood Low Dresser

Mirrors are optional for a low dresser. All styles have a matching mirror. Attaching to the back of the dresser with brackets, there are no holes in the dresser top. This allows you to remove the mirror and use the dresser on it's own if you so decide.

Low dressers are ideal for shorter adults who may find the mirror on top of a tall dresser to be too high. If you like to use the bedroom mirror as you get ready in the morning, consider the taller mirror that accompanies a low dresser. High dresser mirrors are often more landscape in size rather than vertical.

The versatile height of a low dresser moves easily throughout your home. Setup in a foyer or behind the sofa to add storage and ground a large space. Use it as a TV stand in the living room or bedrooms. Some dresser styles setup beautifully in the dining room as a buffet or sideboard.

Construction Details for Amish Low Dressers

All low dressers include dovetailed drawer boxes and solid wood materials throughout. Amish furniture makers never use veneers or engineered wood products. The drawers feature solid poplar wood for the inside of the drawer, dovetailed at the front and back to create strong joints. Drawer bottoms are plywood, which allows expansion and contraction of the wood without damage to drawers.

As you browse our gallery, you will find some low dressers with face frame construction and others with a post style. The Craftsman Mission, Carrington and Weston dressers have a simple, arched cutout at the bottom to finish the face frame style. Post construction styles like the Jackson, DCF Mission and Denali dressers have added dimension in the sides of the dressers. Generally speaking, dressers with face frame construction have slightly larger drawers than dressers with post construction.

The drawer fronts are one of the most visual design elements of a low dresser. Consider the style of flat, inset drawers compared to overlay drawers with an edge route. Notice the slight dimension of the Denali dresser drawers, a completely flat drawer front paired with a beaded face frame around the edges. The Carrington dresser appears to have extra large drawers, however, the illusion comes from a drawer front that covers the inset face frame.

Standard drawer slides for all low dressers is a fully extending, ball bearing side mount slide. This durable drawer slide extends easily to allow access to the full depth of the drawer. Soft-closing, undermount drawer slides are available for all dressers upon request. We often recommend soft close drawer slides for children's bedrooms to avoid pinched fingers or slammed drawers.

All Amish low dressers feature a catalyzed conversion varnish that creates a durable finish for your furniture. This finish creates a protective, waterproof finish that will not fade or yellow over time. Please note that the actual wood change color over time as it ages, depending on the wood and stain you choose. Catalyzed conversion varnishes do not require any polishing or wood conditioners to keep your dresser looking good.

Simple cleaning to keep the furniture from dust and grime buildup is all the maintenance required. We recommend a mild cleaner diluted in warm water and wet rag to remove dust and fingerprints. Contact our team anytime for more information on caring for your Amish-made low dresser.

Hardwood Options for a Low Dresser

Like all Amish furniture, low dressers are available in your choice of solid American hardwood. Wood types include Red and White Oak, Cherry, Maple, Hickory, Elm and Walnut wood. Select styles are also available in reclaimed barnwood. All wood types are strong and durable, choosing the best one is largely personal preference.

Red Oak is typically the most affordable hardwood for Amish furniture, readily available throughout Ohio's abundant forests. Pricier hardwoods including White Oak, Walnut and Hickory are available in rustic grade or select grade wood. Rustic wood options are a favorite among many homeowners today, the included knots and sap streaks add character. Our team is always happy to help you compare wood types and find the best one for your dresser.

Maple and Cherry wood have a smooth, subtle grain texture. Maple is ideally suited for light wood stains or rich, dark finishes. Maple wood is our top recommendation for painted finishes, as the subtle grain creates a sleek painted dresser. Cherry wood often features a medium stain, highlighting the natural warm undertones of the wood.

Maple low dressers include the Denali, Miranda and Savannah styles. The Denali Maple dressers showcase light stain colors like Willowbend and rich dark finishes like Brown Velvet. The Miranda collection highlights a multi-step finish that includes Asbury Brown stain with burnished edges. The Savannah is a classic modern farmhouse style, shown in Sandy Point stain.

Hickory and White Oak are most common for a rustic, modern style with light finishes and natural wood texture. The character of the wood is slightly rustic, adding warmth to modern, neutral bedrooms. Stain colors including Willowbend, DCF Sand and Cocoa Light are perfect for adding wood texture that complements contemporary spaces.

Walnut wood dressers typically feature a clear finish that showcases the natural beauty of the wood. Naturally dark brown, rustic Walnut wood includes lighter streaks and small knots that add character and color variation. For a more uniform appearance, we recommend Cocoa Light stain on Walnut wood, featured on the Hudson dresser collection.
