Are All the Dining Tables Extendable?
All table styles are available with a fixed, solid top or with leaves to extend the table. If you choose a dining table with leaves, we have several options. Choose the number of leaves you need to extend the table to your desired length.
The leaves vary in size by the style of the table. We have standard 12" wide leaves, 16" wide leaves and 18" wide leaves. Round dining tables feature hinged, folding leaves for storing inside the tabletop.
Types of Dining Room Table Extensions
Choose the type of extension leaves you prefer. Standard extendable dining tables open from the center of the tabletop. This style allows you to add leaves to the middle of the table. The table opens easily with a gear driven track.
Tables that open from the center of the table offer storage inside the tabletop for leaves. Most table styles can store a minimum of two leaves inside the table. This adds 24" to the length of the table when you extend it. General rule of thumb requires the table to be 12" longer than it is wide for leaves to store inside the top.
Another common option for dining room tables with leaves is to add the leaves at the ends of the table. We call these breadboard extension leaves. The grain of the tabletop runs lengthwise with breadboard ends that run widthwise. The breadboard acts as a stabilizer as the solid wood expands and contracts in humidity changes throughout the year.
Breadboard end extension leaves are popular with farmhouse tables that prefer the look of planks running the length of the table. They are ideally suited for tables with a top at least 2.5" thick, with a pedestal or trestle base. Breadboard leaves do not store inside the table.
Extendable Wooden Dining Tables with 2 Leaves
The most common option is choosing an extendable wooden dining table with 2 leaves. A small, 36" wide x 48" long table with 2 leaves extends from seating 4 people to seating 6 people. Larger tables such as 44" wide x 66" long extend from seating 6 people to seating 8 people with the addition of 2 leaves. Most tables can easily store both leaves inside the table.
Determining the Number of Table Leaves You Need
We create extendable dining tables in whatever size your dining room can handle. Start by considering what size you want the table to be without the leaves, setup for every day. Our team is happy to help you based on your dining room size and the style of table and chairs you envision.
For example, a 36" wide x 48" long table with legs at the corners can seat 4 people comfortably. A table that has a center pedestal may need to be 42" wide x 54" long for 4 people.
Larger tables work the same way. Leg tables that are 66" long are perfect for 6 people. Pedestal tables may need to be 72" long for 6 people. Some trestle table styles need to be at least 80" long for 6 chairs to fit neatly around the base.
After you determine the size and style of the table for daily setup, consider how much room you have to expand. In open floor concepts, you may be able to extend for 12 people or more. Generally speaking, each person should have approximately 24" space to eat comfortably.
Most tables that open from the center can self-store 2-4 leaves. Additional leaves are available with custom gear slides to extend the table for 6-8 leaves. Extra-long extension tracks may result in leaves no longer storing inside the table.
Tables with breadboard end extensions will usually have only 2 leaves. Typically, these leaves are 18" wide, adding 3' when extending both ends of the table.
Extra Support for Dining Tables that Seat 12+ People
If you choose a leg table that extends longer than 84", we automatically add a 5th leg in the center to add support. We provide additional support posts to add when extending tables with more than 6-8 leaves.
Pedestals and trestles work a little differently than leg tables. The pedestal base stays put in the center of the table, where legs at the corners will move with the tabletop. When opting for a pedestal table to extend with 6-8 leaves or more, we offer several solutions.
The most common solution is to design a custom pedestal that splits in the center and moves when extending the table. This keeps the table sturdy when fully extended.
