Handcrafted Oval Dining Table Collection

An oval wood dining table by Dutch Craft Furniture is a classic style, perfect for many homes. We often recommend an oval table for small and narrow spaces. The rounded corners open walkways around the table and reduce the risk of bumping into sharp corners. Let's explore the features of popular oval dining room tables.

Solid Wood Oval Dining Table Options

Choosing solid hardwood for your oval kitchen table ensures that your new furniture will last for generations to come. All oval dining tables are available in your choice of locally sourced American hardwoods. Wood options include Red and White Oak, Maple, Cherry, Hickory, Elm and Walnut. Take the time to compare each wood and the unique characteristics of the grain textures.

All oval wood kitchen table styles are available with a clear, natural finish or your choice of wood stain. Browse our gallery for popular stain colors and request free wood samples. Comparing wood samples in your home allows you to see the differences in texture in your lighting. This also lets you compare colors with existing wood tones in your home.

Our wooden extendable oval dining table styles are solid wood throughout. Amish furniture makers in Ohio never use veneers or engineered wood products in the furniture. This includes tabletops, pedestal bases, and the hidden structure support inside the table. The solid wood structure ensures longevity, with the ability to repair and touch up better than veneer furniture.

Consider an Oval Extendable Dining Table

Oval tables are available as fixed, solid tops or with extension leaves that store inside the table. Each leaf adds 12 inches to the length of the table. The tables extend easily with gear driven slides to reveal the wooden leaves. The exact number of leaves stored inside the table varies by the size and style.

Generally speaking, tables at least 42" wide x 54" long will store 2 leaves inside the tabletop. Larger tables 48" wide x 72" long will often store up to 4 leaves inside the top. Contact our team at Dutch Craft for more information on how a specific table will store the extension leaves.

Oval Pedestal Dining Table vs Legs at the Corners

Since our local craftsmen build all oval dining tables from scratch, choose the base that fits your style and vision. We often recommend pedestal bases for oval tabletops, with options ranging from traditional to mid-century modern. Pedestal bases make it easier to add additional chairs at the end of the table, without the corner legs. In contrast, leg style bases are often better for narrow tables, allowing chairs to fit better underneath the table.

Comparing Types of Oval Tabletops

Taking a closer look at the various types of oval tabletops reveals even more custom options. A true oval shaped tabletop is classic and timeless. Often paired with a rounded edge, this top shines on classic Amish furniture styles. We display it throughout the gallery, including the Traditional Oval Double Pedestal Table.

Modern oval dining table styles often do not feature a true oval shaped tabletop. More common are shapes like the Boat tabletop or Sabre shaped top. Some oval tabletops are actually rectangular, with 3"-5" radius corners. So how should you determine the best choice for your new custom oval dining table?

A boat shaped or sabre shaped tabletop has a similar feel to the classic oval, but with distinct differences. Boat shaped tabletops feature rounded sides with straight ends. The straight ends make it easier for two people to share the space for dinner. We feature boat tops on popular dining tables like the Biltmore and Classic Shaker table styles.

Sabre tops are the opposite of boat tops, with straight sides and bowed ends. We often recommend sabre tops for long, narrow dining rooms. Sabre tops are a customer favorite on the Carlisle Double Pedestal table.

The main reason we recommend other types of table top rather than a true oval is for the leaf storage. True Oval table sizes that offer leaf storage inside the table are limited. A true oval shape top often cuts off too much of the corner and eliminates the ability to store leaves inside the table. In contrast, boat top and sabre top tables offer a wide range of sizes available with leaf storage.

Another reason we recommend an oval table with a boat or sabre tabletop is the skirting underneath the table. The skirting, also called the apron, is the 3" horizontal board we attach underneath the tabletop. This apron keeps an extendable wood tabletop from warping in humidity changes throughout the year. The skirting of the table also hides the mechanical track inside the top that allows the table to extend.

On true oval tabletops, the apron is steamed and bent to follow the curve of the tabletop. The creates a smooth, aesthetically pleasing effect. We recommend choosing a pedestal base rather than legs at the corners for true ovals.

On Sabre tops the apron is completely straight, even where the ends bow out slightly. The straight apron beautifully contrasts the rounded ends of the table. Adding a beveled edge creates formality and highlights the unique shape of the top. Most sabre tops feature a pedestal base.

Boat tabletops feature slightly bent apron to follow the curve along the sides of the table. The straight ends make it easy to mix and match pedestal bases or legs at the corners. Notice the boat top of the Classic Shaker table appears oval with the rounded sides, emphasized with a beveled edge.
