Comparing Hardwoods: Cherry Wood vs Maple Wood

Cherry wood is similar in texture and wood grain to Maple wood. Many people cannot tell the difference on medium to dark stained furniture. The Janka wood hardness scale rates them both at 950 for strength and durability.

The natural color tones of the wood present the greatest difference between the two. Maple is light colored, with brownish streaks in the wood. Cherry has a warm reddish undertone.

On light stain colors, this difference in natural wood coloring plays a huge factor in the final appearance. We do not recommend Cherry wood with light, cool gray stain colors. Cherry is best suited to warm stain colors that enhance the natural wood tones.
