Maple Wood Dining Table: Exploring Amish Furniture Options
Maple dining tables are a classic staple in many Amish furniture stores. From natural Maple wood dining sets to sleek, modern styles, Maple is a versatile wood option. You will likely find Maple dining tables that feature painted, distressed styles, light wood stains and rich dark finishes. Let's explore the pros and cons of this popular wood choice.
Maple wood is readily available throughout Ohio's abundant forests, making it an affordable hardwood option. Amish furniture makers appreciate the characteristics of Maple that make it easy to work with.
Solid Maple Dining Table Options
All Amish dining tables are available in solid Maple wood. From classic Shaker designs to formal and farmhouse tables, Maple is a favorite option.
Maple dining room tables come in pedestal and trestle tables or tables with legs at the corners. Choose the shape of the tabletop: round, oval, rectangular or boat shaped. Tabletops may be fixed or extendable with leaves that store inside the tabletop. Choose any chair style to match the Maple table you choose.
Black and wood table designs often use Ebony stain on Maple wood for the base of the table and chair frames. Tabletops may also be Maple wood or a contrasting wood, such as Hickory and Oak, with rustic wood grains. Black Maple bases with Elm wood tabletops have been a classic favorite for many years.
Maple vs Oak Wood
Oak and Maple are two of the most common wood options in Amish furniture. While they are both hardwoods and affordable options, they have a completely different appearance. The grain of Maple wood is smooth and subtle, creating sleek finishes with even color tones. Oak has a prominent wood grain and adds a warm, rustic feel to tables.
Maple vs Cherry Wood
Maple wood is similar to Cherry wood in many ways. The texture of the grain and overall strength and durability is almost identical. Medium and dark, warm stain colors appear to have little differences between the two.
Light stain colors, however, create a completely different look. The natural redness of Cherry wood adds a warm undertone that is visible in light stain colors.
Smooth Painted Maple Dining Furniture
Most white painted Amish furniture is Maple wood. Several factors contribute to this. The even texture of Maple creates a smooth painted finish, completely covering the wood grain. In comparison, painting Oak wood will show the texture of the grain through the paint.
Our gallery showcases Decorator White and Country White on Maple in smooth, single step paint finishes. Our Lakeland Dining Set features a painted Maple wood base and contrasting Rustic White Oak tabletop.
Multi-Step Painted & Distressed Finishes on Maple Dining Furniture
Farmhouse tables often feature pedestal or trestle bases with added distressing. Distressing is an art form and often unique to the craftsman. Browse our gallery and see tables with light and minimal distressed finishes that blend well in new homes and modern decor styles. Other distressed finishes add rustic appeal, perfect for cabins and country home styles.
In all cases, the reason for distressing Maple wood is to add texture and dimension to the smooth wood grain. Application of a glaze onto the initial paint adds the appearance of natural weathering. The color of the added glaze may range from light gray or tan to dark brown and even black. Popular colors like Coastal White and Glacier White include a paint and glaze.
Multi-step, distressed finishes are an upcharge for all dining furniture because of the added time and labor involved. Finish prices vary by color and furniture items. Detailed furniture styles often require extra time versus simple, Shaker styles.
Light Wood Stains on Maple
The light, natural color of Maple wood makes it a perfect option for wood finishes like Cocoa Light, Willowbend and many other stains. Gray stain colors like Gunsmoke, DC Driftwood and Antique Slate appear "more gray" on Maple wood that other wood options that have more yellow tones.
Rich Dark Stain Colors on Maple wood
Maple wood tables are formal dining favorites in colors like Rich Tobacco, Ebony, Dark Knight, and Rich Cherry. The dark stain colors minimize wood grain variation, adding a modern edge to traditional styles. We recommend distressed wood tabletops in these dark colors, rather than a smooth, glossy tabletop that may show scratches over time.
Care and Maintenance of a Solid Maple Dining Table
Caring for your Maple wood dining set is simple. Keep the furniture indoors, in a controlled temperature and humidity. Clean the dining set regularly using a mild soap and water to keep it free of dust and grime.
The finish we use on all Maple furniture is a catalyzed conversion varnish. This finish is waterproof, UV resistant and heat resistant to 220 degrees. We do not recommend polishes or wood conditioners on your Maple wood table.
