Leaf Options for Solid Wood Extendable Dining Table Sets
Traditional Tables with Leaves Added to Center of the Top
As you shop our collection of dining room tables, you will find two main styles of extendable tables. The first type of extendable wooden table is the classic option, that opens from the center of the table to add leaves. Tables with this type of extension often allow leaves to store inside the tabletop. The table opens easily with gear driven slides.
When adding leaves to the center of the table, a pedestal or trestle base will not move. Only the tabletop extends, making it easy for one person to add leaves by themselves. Tables with legs at the corners may require two people, as the base of the table moves outward with the top. Tables with legs at the corners will include a fifth leg in the center if the table extends longer than 84".
The number of leaves available for an extendable dining set varies by table style. Standard table options include 2-4 leaves for most table styles. Narrow, 36" wide dining tables often store 2 leaves inside the tabletop. Wider tables, at least 42" wide may self-store up to 4 leaves.
Most Amish dining tables have 1" thick tabletops. The leaves are matching thickness, creating a seamless appearance when extending the table. The first leaves for your extendable dining set will have the apron on the underside of the leaf, like the table has. This keeps the wooden leaves from warping in humidity changes.
Some extendable dining sets feature tables with built-down tabletops. The classic Farmhouse Trestle Dining Set features a thick, 2.5" built down tabletop. Since the leaf for this table is the same thickness, only 1 leaf will self-store inside the tabletop.
Large Expandable Dining Table Sets with Breadboard Extensions
The second type of dining table set with a leaf features breadboard end extension. This style is ideally suited to large pedestal or trestle tables with plank style tabletops. Leaves are 18" wide and added to each end of the table. The base of the table does not move, and leaves do not self-store on this type of a table.
You may consider a table with breadboard end extensions if you prefer the look of the wood grain running the length of the table. Solid wood will expand and contract across the width of the grain in humidity changes throughout the year. To keep the table functioning smoothly in these changes, a table that opens from the center will have the wood grain running widthwise.
Breadboard end extension table sets will have the grain running lengthwise, except for the boards at the end of the table. The leaves will have the same detail, with the boards along the ends keeping the leaf from warping in humidity changes.
Round Table Sets with a Leaf
Solid wood round dining tables are available with one folding, self-storing leaf to extend into an oval shape. Some round pedestal dining sets are available with a second leaf on request. The leaf sizes for round tables vary from 12"-18" depending on table style.
Dining Table Sets with Butterfly Leaves
Butterfly leaves attach to the table and unfold automatically as you extend the table. We do not recommend a butterfly leaf system for solid wood dining tables.
What is the Maximum Number of Leaves Available for Amish Dining Sets?
The maximum number of leaves varies by the table style. Most large dining sets for 6-10 people are available with custom options that allow extending for 12 people or more. The tables include extra support like a split pedestal or additional center legs that keep your table strong. Extra-large dining table sets may have wood slides to allow the longer track to fit the table size.
For extra-large dining table sets that include 6+ leaves, contact our team at Dutch Craft Furniture. We are happy to guide you through the process to find the best large extendable dining set for your space.
Choosing the Best Size for Your Extendable Dining Table and Chairs
Choose the extendable solid wood dining table style and size that fits your space for every day. Measure your kitchen or dining area, remembering to allow a minimum of 3' for walkways around the table. As you measure for a dining set, add 12" to the table size to allow for chairs to fit around the table. Allow 24" minimum when sitting at the table.
The number of chairs that fit around the table varies by the style of the base. Generally speaking, tables with legs at the corners will fit 4 people at a minimum of 36" wide x 48" long. Six chairs fit neatly around a 44" wide x 66" long table.
Fitting chairs around a pedestal or trestle dining table has greater variation. Most trestle tables will fit 6 people at 42" wide by 72" long. If your dining room has space, we suggest a longer table. This gives you more options for how the chairs fit around it.
Always start by finding the perfect size table for every day. Make sure the dining set feels proportional as you live in the space on a daily basis. Then select the number of leaves you need to accommodate your family and friends for holidays and game nights. For most extendable dining sets, adding 2 leaves to your table allows you to add one more person on each side of the table.
Choosing the Best Wood for a Dining Table with Leaf and Chairs
Solid hardwoods are a strong, durable option for hardworking kitchen table sets with leaf. Our Amish furniture makers offer all extendable dining sets in your choice of American hardwood. Wood options include Cherry, Elm, Maple, Hickory, Walnut and Red or White Oak wood.
Each available wood type has unique characteristics and textures. Explore the natural beauty of Black Walnut wood, often featuring a clear protective finish and no wood stain at all. Browse classic Oak extendable dining sets, timeless and well-known for durability and strength. Find inspiration in the versatility of Maple wood, showcased in light, blonde and gray tones or rich dark stains like Gunsmoke and Rich Tobacco.
Our team at Dutch Craft Furniture is happy to guide you through the process of choosing the best wood for your extendable dining set. Call us with any questions you may have or to request wood samples mailed to your home.
The finish on all extendable dining table sets is a catalyzed conversion varnish. Conversion varnishes are thinner than common polyurethanes, including a catalyst that hardens as it dries. This durable finish is waterproof, heat resistant to 220 degrees and UV resistant to fading and yellowing. Keep your furniture looking good with simple cleaning, no polishes or wood conditioners recommended.
Complete Your Extendable Dining Set with Chairs and Benches
All dining room table sets with a leaf are available with your choice of Amish dining chairs or benches. As you browse our chair collection, you will find solid wooden dining chairs in a wide range of styles. Traditional classics like the Austin, Curlew and Urbana chairs feature steam bent back slats to add lumbar support. The Windsor style of neutral black dining chairs like the Millcreek and Winston pair with most table sets.
Add fabric seats to wooden dining chairs for even more comfort. The Biltmore Large Extendable Dining Set in solid Cherry wood features Austin chairs with upholstered seats. The Newport Black Round Extendable Dining Set has a modern feel with Oregon dining chairs and upholstered seats.
Upholstered dining chairs add a softness and formality to your extendable dining table set. The Emerson, Parson and Shreveport upholstered dining chairs are available in a wide range of fabrics for your convenience. Our collection features high density foam and durable, easy to clean fabrics. Mix and match wooden and upholstered dining chairs in your dining set for a custom feel.
Dining benches are a modern, space saving alternative for extendable table sets. Adding a bench along one side of your table frees up walkways in a narrow dining space. All extendable dining room sets are available with a matching bench. The Settler's Trestle Dining Set features a bench with matching base style to the classic table base.
Consider an extendable bench with leaves, perfect for small spaces. Our small Lakeland Modern Dining Table Set is our top recommendation for an extendable dining set for small spaces. The leg table fits 4 people, including self-storing leaves that accommodate up to 8 people. An extendable dining bench on one side of the table will fit between the legs and hide underneath the table.
Extendable dining benches are available as 3',4' and 5' sizes. All expandable benches will double in length when fully extended. The bench leaves store neatly in the included storage crate. Extendable benches eliminate the need for extra wooden chairs, which may be bulky and hard to store in your home.
