Upholstered dining chairs provide more comfort, creating the perfect setting for a leisurely dinner with family and friends. The most comfortable wooden dining chair will never match up to the softness of a fully upholstered dining chair.
Upholstery fabric options for dining chairs allow you to add colors, prints, and textures for any interior design style. Genuine leather or velvet dining chairs in classic, dark colors add timeless appeal to formal dining rooms. Opt for light, neutral fabrics with subtle texture in casual, farmhouse spaces. Many upholstered dining chairs also include nail heads, adding a decorative, metal accent in your choice of finish.
Unlike wood or metal options, upholstered chairs are a great accent in many other rooms. Add extra seats in the living room when you have guests. Create a reading corner in the bedroom or flanking the fireplace. Use them as stylish desk chairs in your home office.
The number one concern with fabric dining chairs is cleaning. Spills will happen, especially with little kids at the table. Look for fabric or leather options rated easy to clean, rather than requiring special cleaning solvents. Fabrics with some color variation in the pattern will also hide the occasional tough stain better than solid colors.
Another concern we often hear with our customers, is the question of durability. Our upholstered dining chairs are handcrafted locally by Amish artisans. This guarantees the same quality and attention to detail as our solid wood furniture. However, fabric is not indestructible, especially with kids and pets in the home.
To provide the highest quality in upholstered dining chairs, we start with a sturdy Maple wood frame. We use only solid pieces of high-density foam. Upholstery options include the Crypton home fabrics, an easy living performance collection. This is an excellent choice for high traffic areas like dining rooms.
You can reupholster a well-built fabric dining chair as time goes by. If your dog finally grows out of the chewing stage, a custom upholstery shop will be able to recover the chairs in new fabric. This is also an option if you grow tired of the fabric, or it starts showing wear and tear. Be aware though, because of the labor involved, reupholstering chairs is often more expensive than buying new chairs.
Upholstered dining chairs can be more expensive than wooden options, especially when using genuine leather hides. However, current design trends have created many multi-step finish colors for wood chairs, which evens out the price tags.
Amish craftsmen make our solid wood dining chairs to last for generations to come. The catalyzed conversion varnish used to finish the chairs is guaranteed to be waterproof, eliminating worry about occasional spills at dinner.
The only maintenance required is simply cleaning them regularly with a mild soap and water. Never use a polish or wood conditioner, which will leave a residue on the finish. With minimal care and cleaning, hardwood dining chairs will look good for many years.
Browse the wide variety of options in our chair gallery for inspiration. The Janka hardness scale rates Hickory wood at 1820 and Quartersawn White Oak at 1335. Wood types like those are especially tough in preventing knicks and dents from daily use and bumps into the base of the table.
Wooden dining chairs are a classic style. Natural wood tones add warmth and richness to all decor styles, regardless of current design trends.
The wood and color selected for any chair style will dictate the overall feel. Choose from ladder back or X-back designs in a light, distressed finishes for modern farmhouse dining rooms. Traditional mission and craftsman designs shine in Quartersawn White Oak wood with Michael's Cherry stain. Rift sawn white oak with a light stain brings a mid-century modern appeal.
This is a comment we hear all the time. Everyone has sat in wooden chairs that looked good yet were horribly uncomfortable.
Our Amish kitchen chairs are built using steamed and bent slats in the back to provide support and comfort uncommon in wood chairs. As you browse our chair gallery, notice the profile of the backs. The lumbar support is built in, allowing your family to linger comfortably and catch up around the dining table.
To complement the design of the chair backs, you will notice a scoop in the seat profile as well. The combination of steam bent backs and scooped seats create surprisingly comfortable wood dining chairs.
No question - solid wood chairs are heavy. To minimize this, select a smaller chair style, or one without arms. Wood like Cherry or Maple is less dense, which also makes a lighter chair.
In some cases, an Amish dining table with matching wood chairs can overwhelm the space with too much wood grain. This is especially true is small dining rooms or kitchens, where there may be wood cabinets, trim, doors, and floors.
For spaces with existing wood floors and cabinets, select your dining furniture wisely. Maple and Cherry wood have a smooth, subtle grain texture that contrasts nicely with the prominent grain of an Oak or Hickory floor.
Choose a dining set with a painted table base and chair frames to provide needed contrast to wood floors. This also works to highlight the wood grain on the tabletop and chair seats. Another way to create contrast is by adding an area rug underneath the table.
Many people mix and match fabric and wood chairs. Upholstered captain's chairs only at the ends of the table allow you set small children on the easier to clean wood seats. Choosing wood chairs with leather seats adds a touch of comfort without committing to fabric on a large scale. Fabric chairs with a wooden dining bench on one side of the table keeps the set from being overly formal.
Armed with the pros and cons of both dining chair styles, you can feel confident as you start shopping. Custom furniture allows you to decide which product features are important in your life.
Our sales and design team will be happy to provide a 3D drawing of your dining room, displaying your selected Amish made dining chairs. ]]>A dresser projects classic charm that transcends time, and it’s a staple that has earned its place in homes of all eras. Void of complex stylistic lines, it boasts an uncomplicated silhouette, making it a canvas for interior design motifs. The dresser generously offers plenty of tabletop space, allowing for personalization and organization with a personal touch. Add the optional mirror to create a dressing area within your bedroom, especially helpful for those sharing the bathroom. Above the dresser can also be a great place to hang a TV on the wall, if the mirror is not needed.
Meanwhile, the chest of drawers stands elegantly as a functional object of beauty. Its narrow, vertical profile is not just space-efficient; it adds a sense of height and an illusion of spaciousness in cozier rooms. Chests cater to the verticality of a room, gently directing the eye upward and steering one’s emotions toward an expansive feel. This is often a great option for children’s bedrooms or small guest rooms, adding storage without taking up too much floor space.
The choice is often not about which piece fulfills a need better but which marries the desired aesthetic best. A dresser in rich cherry or oak could be your heart’s delight if you’re carving out a traditional space or vintage vibes are your muse. Choose a solid wood Amish dresser if you’re looking for a furniture piece that will withstand the test of time. On the other hand, a contemporary or minimalist ambiance may find harmony in the sleek lines of a chest of drawers in light, natural woods.
It’s not just the outward impression that counts but the inside that will serve your daily needs when contemplating which furniture to purchase. Consider how each piece can maximize storage. Does your wardrobe require wide spaces for folded clothes? A dresser might be the right path. However, a chest of drawers might be the answer if your needs gravitate toward a division of smaller items.
So, which is better: a dresser or a chest of drawers? Ultimately, the answer lies within you and the story you want to tell in your living or personal space. Like people, each home is unique and deserves a custom fit. Investigate your needs and space potential, and choose the piece that serves a practical purpose and tells a story of innovation and warmth in your home.
]]>Nightstands come in hundreds of styles, from traditional wooden options to contemporary metal and glass versions. Consider the style and color of your bed and the wall behind it. Then select a complementary material and color for the bedside tables.
Be creative when selecting the nightstands. In large bedrooms, a complete matching bedroom suite helps the space feel cohesive and grounded. For smaller rooms, consider repurposing a living room end table or small chest of drawers as a bedside table.
Nightstands with an open shelf underneath instead of closed drawers are another great style choice for small bedrooms. The open style adds an airy feeling and makes the space appear larger.
Traditional nightstand height ranges from 24-32" high, depending on the height of your mattress. As long as the size of the table is proportionate in the space, there are many functional options.
Purchasing an Amish furniture nightstand has many benefits. Aside from the ability to select your hardwood type and stain or paint color, you can order a custom size in any style. Additional features like a hidden jewelry drawers and sliding tops are available on some styles.
For ease in managing electrical cord clutter, consider requesting an outlet built into the nightstand top or back.
We guarantee that the finish on our Amish nightstands is waterproof. This eliminates the need for a coaster to prevent water rings from your glass overnight.
Great nightstand decor starts with the top being clutter free. Many traditional styles have three drawers to hide your belongings yet keep them at arm's length. An open base nightstand is a great place to add a woven basket for extra blankets.
Place a decorative tray on top for small items. This tray can hold items that you typically use in the bedroom at night, such as your ring and phone. It is a convenient way to keep these items organized and within arm's reach.
Your alarm clock can be both functional and decorative. Choose from vintage and traditional or sleek, modern designs.
Lights are a great way to add function and express your personal style. Make sure the size of the lamp is the correct scale for your nightstands. Use warm colored light bulbs to create a cozy, relaxing ambiance that helps you unwind at the end of your day.
Table lamps in a traditional shape and neutral color blend with many bedroom styles. For a fresh, modern touch, choose a lamp with a sleek metal base. This can be a great way to add a gold or copper accent color in your room.
The lampshade is another option for personality to shine. Select a bold pattern or color to update the style in a budget friendly way.
Including a vase of flowers or a houseplant in your nightstand decor adds a natural touch. Cut flowers are a great way to add seasonal touches, especially in the spring and summer months. Add a small vase with a single bloom from your garden to create a welcoming guest bedroom for overnight visitors.
Houseplants are a great way to add a long-lasting natural touch. Low light requiring houseplants like pothos or snake plant are a great option for bedrooms.
Add a stack of books for classic nightstand decor. This is another opportunity to express your personality. Display beautiful coffee table books about your favorite hobby or interest. Keeping your favorite novels close makes it easy to read when you can't fall asleep.
Browse thrift stores and antique malls for beautiful old books that double as decorative items.
Incorporating personal items is another way to create a comforting bedroom. Display photos of loved ones in a decorative picture frame. Showcase small treasures from places you've traveled to, like shells collected on a trip to the beach.
Displaying a favorite quote or Bible verse on your nightstand is another way to help you relax and gain perspective after a long day.
Doing a quick seasonal refresh on your nightstand decor adds an instant update to your bedroom. Swap your usual houseplant for a mini-Christmas tree and a small ornament during the holiday season. Display fall branches gathered on a walk outside for a long-lasting autumn arrangement.
Following this guide will help you add the finishing touches to your bedside tables. Lift your bedroom from boring and ordinary. Create a welcoming atmosphere that calms and relaxes you at the end of the day.
]]>We first need to understand the heartbeat of the room to truly grasp the essence of what makes a children’s bedroom perfect. Every detail serves a purpose in this dynamic ecosystem, from the colors to the furniture. As a designer, your canvas is unique, defined by the individuality of the little person it houses.
Children’s needs evolve with time, and so should their environment. A preschooler’s space should differ greatly from a pre-teen’s retreat. Incorporate educational elements into your child’s room. Consider building a kid-friendly reading nook or a study area for older children. These elements ensure the space doesn’t just follow trends but actively nurtures growth.
One should not overlook safety in the pursuit of aesthetic pleasure. You should seamlessly blend safety features into the design, from rounded edges on furniture to securing heavy fixtures. These features ensure peace of mind for parents and instill a sense of security in their children.
Children’s bedrooms often reflect the magic of their favorite tales and heroes. You’re not just filling a room with furniture and decor by choosing a theme that resonates with your child’s passions—you’re creating a backdrop for adventure.
Turning the bedroom into a themed space for the younger ones can spark pure joy. The theme can be as playful and personal as your child’s imagination allows, whether the theme is a whimsical forest, a space odyssey, or an under-the-sea paradise.
The hues selected for the bedroom can influence your child’s mood and behavior. Soft blues and greens can evoke tranquility, while vibrant yellows and reds symbolize energy and creativity. A well-curated color palette can balance the room’s vibrancy with its function as a peaceful sleeping space.
Furniture is the backbone of any room’s design, and it must be adaptable and durable in a children’s bedroom, much like the children themselves.
Being savvy with layout can open possibilities in the often space-restricted bedrooms. Loft beds or bunks could free up valuable floor space for play, while a thoughtfully positioned desk could maximize study time without infringing on the play zone.
Sourcing furniture that serves multiple purposes adds a layer of practicality and can be an adventure in itself. Each piece of furniture should tell a story of comfort and convenience, from beds with storage space to sleeper sofas for impromptu sleepovers.
Kids are rough. They play hard with their toys and slam doors. Consider investing in Amish-made bedroom furniture that will last for years. It provides sturdiness that can withstand the test of playtime, and its timeless aesthetic can adapt to the room’s evolving design over the years.
Innovative storage solutions are your allies in the battle against clutter. Everything needs its place, from toys to textbooks. Older kids may have a larger selection of books, trinkets, and décor. Younger children will most likely have a large assortment of toys that you don’t want them to keep scattered all over the floor. Having furniture that allows kids to easily organize and store their items inspires them to keep their room clean.
Think beyond the traditional toy chest. Shelves designed as part of the room’s architecture, under-bed drawers, and storage ottomans can keep the room tidy without compromising style.
Instill a sense of order with an organization system that is easy for children to maintain. Labeling drawers and using child-accessible storage solutions encourages independence while keeping the room neat.
A children’s bedroom should reflect their personality and story. Encouraging your child to play a role in customizing their space cultivates a sense of ownership and pride. Get your kid’s input by asking what they want their room to look like.
Older kids may want a tranquil or calming space to escape to after a long day. Younger children may desire a room with their favorite movie, video game, or toy characters.
Engage in DIY projects with your child. The process is as rewarding as the end product, whether you’re painting a mural or crafting a mobile together.
Leave room for your child to add their personal touch. Maybe it’s a wall for their art or a space to display their achievements. Allowing them room to grow will ensure they feel at home in their sanctuary.
Creating the perfect children’s bedroom doesn’t have to break the bank. You can achieve a meaningful and cost-effective design by being resourceful. Here are some budgeting tips to help you make the most of your dollars and cents.
Second-hand treasure hunts or end-of-season sales can yield budget-friendly finds. A coat of paint or creative upholstery can breathe new life into pre-loved pieces, making them unique to your child’s space.
Repurposing furniture from other areas of the home or their previous life in a nursery highlights the room’s transitional nature, chronicling your child’s growth through the years. Repaint a dresser, desk, or toy bin to bring the piece back to life.
A perfect children’s bedroom is not just a reflection of your child’s individuality; it’s a harmonious blend of play, peace, adventure, and security. This space will serve as the silent witness to their laughter, lessons, and love in the ebb and flow of their lives.
Cognizant design that evolves with your child’s needs can support their emotional and mental growth. A clutter-free, organized room that is easy to maintain can foster a sense of responsibility and belonging.
Your children’s living environment should change with them as they grow. Keep the design flexible, with elements you can easily interchange as their interests shift and they begin to carve out their identities.
Your child’s bedroom is an investment in their joy and development. You ensure they have the perfect space to grow, learn, and—most importantly—be themselves by considering each element with care, from the structure to the smallest piece of decor. Remember, designing the perfect children’s bedroom is more than supplying walls and a roof; it’s a testimony to your love and dedication as a parent. It’s where the magical memories of your child’s youth will unfold, one story at a time.
]]>Light, neutral paint colors are the starting point. Painting your walls and ceiling in a coat of white paint with warm undertones is an instant refresh. Warm whites perfectly complement natural wood tones.
The key is in the undertones of the paint. Bright whites and cool undertones lack the warmth and coziness we want to add to our bedrooms. Too much warmth and the paint may appear too beige or tan.
Test out a few paint samples in your bedroom. Pay attention to the amount of light your room receives and how it affects the colors.
Many bedrooms feature wide plank, wood floors or a laminate version of the same look. Colors range from light, natural wood tones to medium dark stained floors. The key is neutral. If your vision includes a wooden modern farmhouse bedroom set, think about creating some contrast in the floor color.
Add a rug to your wood floors. The rustic grain texture of a wood floor marries beautifully with an area rug that adds coziness. For a classic look, choose a natural, jute rug. Solid colors or muted tones in the area rug add a layer of subtle texture.
Adding an area rug is also a perfect way to incorporate your choice of accent colors. A soft pattern that includes blues, greens or warm grays adds depth and interest to the space.
If you prefer to add carpeting to your bedroom floors, apply the same rule as walls and ceilings. Stick to a light colored neutral.
Now that we have set the background to complement, the fun part begins! Choosing your furniture is a major part of the overall effect. The headboard should always be the focal point of the master bedroom. Tall headboards are especially effective in bedrooms with high ceilings.
The amount of furniture you need is dependent on the size and layout of the space. Large, spacious open suites are grounded and cohesive with a full matching bedroom set. If your bedroom has only the traditional shared closet, this is a great way to add lots of storage.
In smaller bedrooms, we recommend choosing a bed with platform storage drawers built into the base. This adds the same amount of storage as a tall chest of drawers, without consuming any additional floor space!
For bedrooms with spacious walk-in closets, add the dresser or chest of drawers inside the closet. Consider having custom storage furniture made in a matching wood and style to the bed. This way you will be able to maximize your storage space while maintaining a cohesive feel.
Add a cozy accent chair in the corner for reading or an upholstered bench at the foot of the bed. A decorative writing desk in a contrasting wood tone serves as convenient workspace when you need it.
The style of the furniture is not as important as the finish color. While many modern farmhouse interiors use clean lines for a minimalist approach, that is only one option. A decorative furniture style in natural wood tones elevates the space without being formal.
In bedroom furniture, many people choose the subtle grain texture of Maple wood. This is especially perfect for styles that include decorative moulding and trim work.
In carpeted bedrooms, choose a simple furniture style, made of a rustic wood like Hickory or White Oak. The prominent grain texture adds a touch of instant warmth. For a rustic addition, consider a bed made of reclaimed wood.
Common light stain colors include Sandy Point and Cocoa Light. Darker stains include Brown Velvet, Gunsmoke, Asbury Brown, or Dark Knight.
For bedroom floors with prominent wood grain or lots of wooden base trim, choosing an upholstered bed creates rest for the eyes. Painted furniture or using a multi-step finish like Antique Valley can help prevent different wood textures from clashing.
For master suites with high ceilings, consider adding a decorative chandelier above the bed. Pendant lights hanging above the nightstands is a cozy farmhouse bedroom accent if you have a standard height ceiling. Lights are a wonderful way to add a metal accent, from classic black iron to muted gold or silver finishes.
Shiplap walls are the classic accent in modern farmhouse decorating. The amazing work Joanna Gaines has done on Fixer Upper is a testament to its' popularity. White shiplap is the classic, but it is equally beautiful painted a different color. A dark painted shiplap wall in bedrooms can be the perfect backdrop for a light wooden or upholstered headboard.
Other accent wall options include board and batten, or simply choosing a contrasting paint color as a feature wall.
The bedding and pillows to complete the look are often clean and simple. Stick to light and neutral for the basics, your comforter or duvet, quilt, and the main sheet set. Bonus points for being budget friendly since this works all year long.
Neutral basics have versatility and can enhance seasonal decor. For example, you can use them to showcase Christmas pillows during the holidays. Add seasonal layers like fur blankets and cozy textures in fall and winter.
In the Spring, you can switch to a light blue or green blanket. This way, you can easily update your home decor throughout the year.
Creating a modern farmhouse bedroom can be an exciting part of building a new house. In existing homes, start small. Take one step at a time, from fresh paint on the walls or simply investing in a bed frame with added storage. Build off that to create the modern farmhouse bedroom of your dreams!
At Dutch Craft Furniture, we are happy to provide you with wood and color samples to view in the comfort of your own home. Our team will assemble a quote for any custom modern farmhouse bedroom furniture you require. We also provide a 3D photo rendering of the final result upon request.

]]>Height is the first and most critical factor when selecting barstools. The last thing you want is to have either too high or too low stools for your counter—neither situation is comfortable or aesthetically pleasing. Measure the height of your counter or bar, from the floor to the topmost edge, ensuring a space between 9 and 13 inches for legroom. Then, decide whether you need counter or bar height stools; counter heights are typically around 24 to 26 inches from floor to seat, while bar heights range from 28 to 32 inches.
Your barstools should enhance the overall look of your dining space. Harmonizing styles doesn’t necessarily mean a monotonous match, but choosing barstools that parallel or contrast neatly with your kitchen aesthetic can add flair.
For example, chic metal will blend beautifully if your kitchen design is contemporary. A rustic or industrial kitchen will benefit from wooden Amish bar chairs or leather barstools.
Aesthetics are crucial, but so is comfort. Opt for barstools with a comfortable seat and supportive backrest if you anticipate spending meaningful time chatting or dining at your kitchen island.
Seats should be spacious enough to accommodate various sizes without feeling too snug or overly large. Soft padding is a bonus for those who prefer a cushioned seat; some may even appreciate a footrail for additional support.
Durability is key in high-traffic areas—especially for families with children and pets. Choose barstools consisting of stain-resistant and easy-to-clean materials if you anticipate frequent spills. Leather and vinyl are strong choices for quick cleanup, while wood and high-quality metal can last for years with proper care.
Space can dictate whether you opt for backless, swivel, or armless barstools. You can tuck backless stools under counters for small spaces to save space when not in use. Swivel stools can be a great fit if you have the room and value mobility.
Allow for 26 to 30 inches of space per stool, center to center, to provide ample personal space and maintain a comfortable flow of movement in your dining area when determining the number of barstools needed.
Selecting barstools that check all the boxes can seem daunting, but it’s a process that can be both enjoyable and rewarding. You’re well on your way to finding the perfect seating that will serve the practical needs of your dining area and contribute to its ambiance and warmth by keeping these quick tips for picking barstools for your dining area in mind. Your barstools will be the unsung heroes of your kitchen, where so much of life’s good stuff happens. Choose wisely, and enjoy the comfort and beauty they bring to your home.
]]>When you are start browsing the options available, have your room dimensions ready to go. Measure your walls, other pieces of furniture in the space, and pay attention to the walkways you naturally use.
A large sectional brings needed bulk and weight to an open floor plan, grounding the space. Smaller rooms take advantage of the modular sofas to adding seating in unused corners.
The ability to customize the layout is one of the top benefits of custom furniture. The optional chaise lounge can be left facing or right facing, depending on your room.
A standard sectional is 3-4 separate units, assembled after delivery. Each unit can be custom sized for the best fit your living space. Add a few seat cushions to the left side or eliminate a seat on the right side, your choice.
Handmade upholstery offers many color and style options. Fabrics, faux leathers and top grain leather hides are available to complement any interior design style. In a formal setting, choose a style with firm back support, allowing comfortable seating for conversation around the room.
Casual, relaxed living rooms often demand comfortable lounging areas. The overstuffed cushions and deep seats of the Westbrook Sectional Sofa are a modern family favorite.
Perhaps the most intimidating part of ordering a custom sofa is the fear of picking the wrong fabric. Of course, there are hundreds of color swatches to choose from! As a rule, fabric tends to appear lighter on a large sofa than on a small color sample.
In most cases, we recommend choosing a solid color for sectionals. Select a complementary print for an accent chair or accompanying throw pillows. Some patterns and prints may look busy on a large sofa.
Spend time browsing home decor magazines and websites to find rooms that have the overall feel you want to achieve. Farmhouse living rooms often have natural wood tones and neutral paint colors. They usually have a sectional couch in a light fabric color that complements the room.
A luxurious, leather L-shaped sofa is a commanding focal point with timeless appeal. Choose a classic color that will blend with any interior design trend. Bonus points for being easy to clean!
Along with the traditional sofas, we offer several high-quality, custom reclining sectional sofas. Everyone gets a place to put your feet up at the end of the day.
Adding power recline allows you to find the perfect location and angle for relaxation. Elderly people or those with a physical disability love this option, as it requires no manual force. Please note that the power reclining sectionals have automated motors and must be plugged into an electric outlet.
Our local, Amish artisans build each sectional using only finest materials. The frames are solid Maple wood for strength and durability. The upholstery shop cuts and sews all fabric and leather. ]]>Size is not the only variable when selecting a table. Consider the room’s size, the table’s intended purpose, and how many people will typically sit around it.
The table’s size must work with the space it occupies. A table that is too large can make a room feel cramped, while one that’s too small might look out of place.
Is the table for family dinners, work meetings, or social gatherings? The purpose of your table will dictate its ideal size and shape. A work table, for instance, may need to accommodate computers and documents, while a vanity table can be considerably narrower.
Consider how many people you’d like to fit around the table. Do you normally host large gatherings or small get-togethers?
There is no shortage of ‘dos’ when finding the right table. Versatility and harmony are the key themes here.
Precision is your friend when choosing a table size. Measure the room with a tape measure, and outline the potential space where you’ll place the table with painter’s tape to gauge the impact of different sizes.
Rectangular tables complement long, narrow spaces. On the other hand, round or oval tables often work better in square rooms. Dutch Craft Furniture offers round barrel dining tables that will make a statement without taking up too much space. Most importantly, consider the traffic flow in the room to avoid creating barriers.
If you entertain guests often or have fluctuating space needs, extendable tables can be a lifesaver. They offer the best of both worlds: a regular setup and the flexibility to accommodate many people.
Steer clear of common table-sizing mistakes that can throw off the balance in your space and hinder usability and comfort.
A table that’s too large for the space can create to a cluttered look. Consider the floor area, the height of the room, and visual space the table it occupies.
Failure to consider the other furniture in the space when picking out a table can result in an unbalanced room. Your table should feel like it belongs in the room, not stick out awkwardly.
Selecting the right table size requires equal parts precision and vision. It needs to fit the physical dimensions of your space and the design of your home. By adhering to these dos and don’ts, you’ll choose a table that looks fantastic and feels like it belongs in your home.
]]>Matching the wood species and stain is one of the easiest ways to coordinate wooden tables and floors. Matching the same wood type will make your space look more cohesive, whether it’s oak, cherry, or maple. However, some major drawbacks come with this approach. Too much of the same wood and color can be overwhelming, especially if the wood has a prominent grain pattern.
Your pieces won’t match perfectly. For example, an oak floor that company A has finished will not match the oak table that company B handcrafted. Understanding this difference can save you some stress. Same thing if you purchase a dining set and add a buffet two years later, even if it comes from the same craftsmen. Several factors come into play, resulting in these distinctions, from variations in stain batches to the sandpaper the wood workers used in the wood shop.
It makes changing styles hard. Every week we have customers who come into the store, telling us they’re tired of the honey oak kitchen they purchased in its heyday of the 80’s and early 90’s. They struggle to know how to update the space without doing a complete remodel because the floors, cabinets, and furniture all match. Adding a buffet in a trendy new color will stick out like a sore thumb.
At Dutch Craft Furniture, we highly recommend selecting complementary wood tones. Choosing a two-tone table is one of the easiest ways to do this. Having the table base painted or using a metal base instead of wood provides a neutral place for your eyes to rest. Then, have the table top made in a complementary finish to your floors.
Selecting a dining set with contrasting wood grain is another easy way to complement the floor. For example, a Hickory or Oak wood floor will have a prominent grain texture and quite a few variations in the color throughout different parts of the wood grain. Add a dining set with a smooth, subtle grain texture like Maple or Cherry wood.
Pay attention to the undertones in the wood. Warm tones will likely be complementary, regardless of wood type and exact stain color. Likewise with cool tones. Picking two different wood or stain types in complementary colors will add depth and interest to your space.
Many customers come into the store with a wood flooring sample while they shop for a new dining set. Currently, we are seeing a lot of warm, gray, or cool brown tones in their samples. A darker shade of the same tones as your light flooring adds a rich warmth to the space. Consider purchasing a lighter wood Amish dining set if you have dark wooden floors. This contrast can add a modern and elegant twist to your space.
Keeping things simple with neutral colors is another way to perfectly coordinate wooden tables and floors. Neutral colors, such as beige, gray, or white, pair well with most wood species and stains, adding a touch of sophistication to your space. Choose one or two complementary colors to accent your space if you want to add more color.
Finally, accessorizing accordingly is essential when creating a perfectly coordinated space. Choose accessories, rugs, curtains, or lighting that complement your wooden tables and floors to combine the entire look. Soft green and blue accents pair beautifully with most wood tones.
Consider these five tips for perfectly coordinating wooden tables and floors when you’re ready to redo your home décor and furnishing. Remember, creating a cohesive look that complements your space is all about matching the wood species and stain or mixing different finishes to create contrast, using neutral colors, and accessorizing accordingly. Take your time, experiment with different elements, and enjoy creating a space you love.
]]>It’s no secret that the sun produces powerful rays, both visible and invisible. These rays can fade colors, bleach fabrics, and damage materials like wood and leather. While some damage is reversible or repairable with professionals, prevention is always better than cure for your furniture.
The main culprit for sun damage is ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These high-energy rays can easily penetrate fabrics, causing fading and discoloration. This process accelerates when you expose furniture to direct sunlight for extended periods.
In addition to UV rays, heat and humidity can also cause harm to your furniture. High temperatures can dry out materials, causing cracking and warping. On the other hand, humidity can create the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow, leading to unpleasant odors and damage.
The first and most important measure you can take to protect your new furniture is to ensure that it has a catalyzed conversion varnish. This is the most durable finish for wood furniture available today. Simply put, it includes a hardening substance known as a catalyst.
The furniture maker must add the catalyst to the finish before the application, spraying it instead of brushing it on in several thin coats. The setup involved to ensure a high-quality finish means this is not an option for DIYing. Our finish specialists create controlled environments at the manufacturing facilities to eliminate even the smallest dust particles in the air.
Now that you understand the finish applied to your Amish furniture, we’ll explore the benefits that it brings.
The fact that real wood will expand and contract with changes in humidity is very important. We look for the hardest finish available that works with solid wood. If the finish is too hard, it’ll crack as the wood expands. Catalyzed conversion varnishes have enough elasticity to accommodate wood expansion and contraction without cracking or peeling.
Catalyzed conversion varnishes contain important UV inhibitors that minimize damage from exposure to direct sunlight. Enjoy the sunlight streaming through the windows, and know your new Amish furniture has protection.
Another wonderful benefit to the finish is the fact that isn’t prone to yellowing over time, as some sealants are. The natural color of the wood may change slightly over time, but the finish itself will not.
The heat resistance of our finish is 220 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you can even set your coffee cup and dinner plate on the tabletop without using a placemat, and there won’t be a white steam spot from the heat.
While the catalyzed conversion varnish is the most durable option available, it’s not indestructible. This wonderful option guarantees that your glass won't leave a water ring if it sweats. But you must be careful with scratches. There is no finish that completely protects wood furniture from knicks and scratches over time with regular use. The great thing about solid wood furniture, though, is that you can almost always have it repaired and refinished to be good as new for the next generation.
What if you have antique furniture or don’t know what kind of finish is on your furniture? Now that you understand why sunlight can harm furniture, we’ll explore some ways to shield it from sun damage.
Carefully consider where you place your furniture relative to windows and other natural light sources. Try to keep your furniture out of direct sunlight, or at least limit the sun exposure it receives.
Another effective way to protect your antique furniture from the sun is by using window treatments, such as blinds, curtains, or tinted glass. These can help filter out UV rays and reduce heat and humidity levels in your home.
Investing in protective covers for your furniture is a simple yet effective way to shield it from sun damage. Various materials create these covers, including UV-resistant fabric, and provide an extra layer of protection against the sun’s rays. This is an option for those pieces you don’t use regularly.
Proper maintenance is key to keeping your furniture in good condition. This preservation includes regularly dusting and cleaning with products specifically for the materials in your furniture. This tip will keep your pieces looking great and help prevent damage from sunlight.
If you have furniture particularly susceptible to sun damage, such as older wooden pieces or leather upholstery, consider rotating it periodically. This will ensure that all sides of the piece receive equal amounts of sunlight and prevent fading or discoloration in one specific area.
As the seasons change, so does the angle and intensity of sunlight that pours into your home. A smart, proactive approach to preserving your furniture’s beauty is regularly rearranging your seating and tables. Shifting your furniture’s position every few months can prevent excessive sun exposure to one area and spread it more evenly. It’s an innovative way to breathe new life into a room while protecting your beloved pieces from premature aging due to the sun.
Applying a protective seal is another highly effective method of preserving your furniture’s longevity and appeal. Various types of sealants are available in the market, each designed to cater to different material requirements. For instance, wood sealants, such as varnishes, lacquers, or polyurethane, can provide your wooden furniture with an added layer of protection against harmful ultraviolet rays. This invisible shield conserves the wood’s rich color and enhances its aesthetic appeal. A spray fabric protector can help resist fading and keep your upholstery’s colors vibrant.
It's very important to understand the construction and original sealant on your furniture before applying any polish or wood sealant. For Amish furniture that the manufacturer has finished with a catalyzed conversion varnish, do not ever apply any polish or sealer. The catalyzed varnish is so hard that anything applied on top of it will never penetrate the wood. It’ll simply leave a residue buildup on top of the finish. That’s incredibly freeing, as there’s little to no maintenance for the consumer! Simple cleaning with mild soap and water is all that’s necessary.
Each piece of furniture tells a story, and with these precautionary measures, you can ensure that your story continues to unfold beautifully. When you have these tools in your arsenal, you can keep your furniture dazzling and provide comfort for many more sunrises and sunsets.
Aside from these main strategies, there are a few other things you can do to protect your furniture from the sun:
Keep an eye out for signs of damage: Regularly inspect your furniture for any signs of fading, discoloration, or other damage from sunlight. Catching these issues early can prevent them from getting worse.
Color Changes Over Time
While the finish we apply to our handcrafted furniture will not change color over time, the reality is that the wood itself may darken or change. The changes in wood color happen faster with daily exposure to hours of sunlight. Understanding the way time affects various hardwoods can help you select the perfect Amish kitchen table.
Cherry wood has a rich, reddish hue naturally. Time and sunlight tend to darken and amplify the red tones. Cherry wood has the most noticeable change in color, especially for natural, clear finish or light stains. We have had customers be surprised when opening a light cherry table that has been sitting in sunlight for a few months and the leaves stored away no longer match the tabletop. If you put a dark stain on Cherry wood, the wood can darken and it will hardly be noticeable.
Red and White Oak has long been a favorite wood used in Amish furniture. It is readily available in our area and a favorite for wood workers. Hickory is also common in our region and has become extremely popular in recent years with its’ beautiful rustic grain texture. Time and sunlight enhance the warm, golden hues in Oak and Hickory. If your furniture has a clear, natural finish or a light stain applied, you may notice a slight yellowing in these wood types. If you select a medium to dark stain for your furniture, you will never notice any change as the wood ages.
Incorporating these tips into your furniture care routine will help ensure your pieces stay in top condition. By being proactive and taking the necessary precautions to shield it, you can enjoy your fine furniture for years without worrying about sun damage. You can then continue to bask in the warm and inviting glow of natural light while keeping your furniture safe and beautiful.
]]>This one is pretty obvious. Most of our platform storage beds offer four large drawers built into the bed frame. That is the storage equivalent of a standard chest of drawers without consuming valuable floor space. This also eliminates the clutter of cheap plastic storage boxes under the bed.
In master bedrooms, we all need extra storage for out of season clothes and bedding. The added storage even keeps your closet and bathroom more organized. Did you know that there are many benefits of storage beds in other bedrooms as well?
In small children's bedrooms, the drawers often become much needed toy storage. They are easy to access, easy for them to put away, and create clutter free spaces. Twin sized beds are available with drawers on one side only.
As kids grow out of their toys, they use the drawers for clothes and collectibles. The drawers are even sturdy enough for books. Storage beds are functional for every age.
Another common use of storage beds is in guest rooms. Here, people use the storage for anything from holiday decor to extra linens and bedding. No judgement if you fill these with your clothes as well! The room is ready for guests, while still offering organized storage for whatever items you need.
Less is more for small bedrooms! Your bed should remain the focal point of the bedroom.
If your bedroom is too full of furniture, even the most beautiful wood pieces feel overwhelming. Large bedrooms with high ceilings and plenty of natural light need multiple large furniture pieces to make an impact. Smaller bedrooms feel open and spacious with less furniture.
Adding drawers into the bed can eliminate extra pieces of furniture that make small rooms feel even smaller. By adding the drawers into the bed, you get the storage you need without adding bulky furniture pieces.
Manufacturers build traditional beds with wood slats in the base to support a mattress and box spring. When you invest in an Amish made storage bed, there is a solid platform built on top of the drawers. This is perfect for supporting the mattress. No need for a separate box spring!
Customize the height of your mattress by adjusting the depth of the drawers. If you need a certain bed height for easier use, talk to our team about adjusting the drawer height. Local Amish craftsmen build each bed one at a time. We are happy to customize it for you!
This one may be surprising to you, since some storage beds can be pricey. However, buying less furniture and no box spring for the mattress can often cost less than expected.
Our bedroom should be a place that calms us as we relax at the end of our day. Don't compromise on the style you want because of needed storage. Our Amish craftsmen offer three different types of storage drawers for a wide range of bed styles. No matter what wood or color you envision, no matter what headboard style, there are storage solutions available!
For many bedrooms, the combination of drawers in the footboard and the siderail is the best layout. This option works with any headboard. The footboard will be 18-22" high. If you are looking for a bed with a higher footboard that matches the style of the headboard, select drawers on the side only.
For those who need the most storage possible, check out our extra deep to floor siderail drawers! Bonus points, if the drawer units are on the floor, dust bunnies cannot accumulate. No need to sweep underneath the bed.
The biggest con of storage beds is how hard they are to move. Solid wood is sturdy and durable, but also heavy. We build our king and queen size storage beds in five separate pieces and assemble them on site. Our delivery teams will bring the furniture into your bedroom and completely setup storage beds for you.
Moving to a new home? Contact us for advice on how to take apart and transport your storage bed effectively.
Now that you understand the pros and cons of storage beds, you can feel confident in selecting the perfect furniture for your bedroom. In most cases, a solid wood storage bed can add loads of functionality and style to any bedroom.
]]>Before purchasing dining chairs, determine the size and layout of your dining space. Are you working with a large or small dining room? The dimensions will influence the shape and size of your chairs. Consider chairs without arms for a small dining area. If you have a bigger space, you can experiment with different styles, including armchairs and high-back chairs. You could even purchase a Amish dining table bench for seating. We offer a matching bench for every style of dining table. Some bench styles even have leaves to expand, just like the table does!
Your dining chairs should match your home’s décor and style. If you have a traditional dining table, matching it with elegant chairs will create a classic feel. On the other hand, a modern dining table works with sleek chairs.
The materials of dining chairs can affect their appearance and comfort. Wooden chairs may look classic, but some traditional styles can be uncomfortable for extended periods of sitting. At Dutch Craft Furniture, we offer a line of Amish made chairs that feature wooden slats in the back that are steamed and bent to provide lumbar support. Cushioned chairs upholstered with fabric or leather may provide a more comfortable dining experience. Plus, various cleaning products make it easy to clean the fabric and leather. No need to worry about spills or stains!
Before shopping for dining chairs, decide on a budget. You don’t want to overspend and neglect other expenses. For example, you could get a new couch or kitchen cabinets. You can certainly find affordable dining chairs without compromising on style and comfort!
Finally, test the chairs before purchasing to get a better idea of their comfort. If you’re purchasing online, read reviews or contact customer service with any questions or concerns.
Finding the perfect dining chairs that match your dining table is easier than you think! Considering these factors can make the process seamless. With these simple steps, you can select the perfect dining chairs that will add comfort and style to your dining room.
]]>Solid wood furniture is built to last, making it an excellent investment. It’s sturdier and more reliable than furniture constructed with synthetic materials. Solid wood furniture can also be repaired, sanded, and refinished in the case of accidental scratches or knicks in the wood.
Solid wood furniture is classic. The warmth and natural beauty of wood add character to any room and can complement various décor styles. Unlike synthetic materials, wood is unique. From the wood’s grain, knots, and natural imperfections to the artistry, each piece has a lovely appeal. For example, an Amish-made nightstand makes any bedroom more cozy and welcoming.
Custom furniture with synthetic materials can be tricky to find. However, you can customize solid wood furniture to reflect your unique style. You can choose a particular wood type, finish, design, and size; the possibilities are endless! Solid wood furniture is a one-of-a-kind complement to your home.
Solid wood furniture is more sustainable than other kinds. Furniture makers often use reclaimed wood, which is more eco-friendly and resourceful than synthetic materials, which require fossil fuels to manufacture.
Buying solid wood furniture is an investment because the furniture can last several generations with regular care. By investing in solid wood furniture, you also invest in quality artistry.
Solid wood furniture is timeless craftsmanship that never goes out of style. If you’re in the market for new furniture, consider investing in solid wood pieces that you and your family can enjoy for years.
]]>The living room would look beautiful with bookcases built to surround the fireplace. Adding a custom locker unit breathes new life into a cluttered mudroom or garage. The basement is a blank slate waiting for magic.
Custom cabinets are a wonderful way to finish your space. Small spaces benefit when you have cabinets built just the right size to keep from overwhelming the area. Open floor plans with high ceilings often need large cabinets with crown molding to be a focal point that grounds the space.
The first step is gathering some inspiration. What are you trying to improve? A space to gather with plenty of counter space and a wine fridge that keeps your drinks at the ready. A home office that you can share without having to move stacks of paper every time you want to use the printer.
Browse on Pinterest, read home design blogs and start sketching out your vision. Don't worry about figuring out the details, just focus on the desired results. Writing your thoughts on paper helps you organize.
Next, it's time to get some dimensions. Measure your space. Be as detailed as possible. Take before pictures of your space many angles.
Pay attention to the natural way you come and go through the space. Do you always use the patio doors when guests come to visit? Keep that walkway spacious as you design the perfect island for your kitchen.
How will you use the space? Is this the main living area that ends up being home to video games and the place you bring guests? Create an entertainment center that includes plenty of storage and hides all the devices when not in use.
Now you are ready to communicate the dream to someone who can help you achieve it. Make sure you work with a designer who understands exactly what you are looking to create.
How can you be sure that the everyone involved shares your vision of the finished product? A picture is worth a thousand words. We use your measurements, pictures of the space, and your inspiration photos to create a 3D blueprint for your review. 3D drawings help our sales, craftsmen, and installation teams work together towards the same goal.
As part of creating a free quote for you, our designers will draft this drawing, complete with all dimensions. Walk through and visualize from all angles to make sure the functionality is as expected.
We can also create a complementary photo realistic rendering of the wood texture and colors selected in the space. Texture and lighting make the space come alive and calm the anxiety of making the wrong color choice.
See at a glance if you like the texture of Hickory wood on the entertainment center next to your wood floors. Maybe the fabric of the sofa is busier than you thought, just looking at the small fabric swatch. This is especially helpful in visualizing a large project.
Every home project is different. Make sure you work with someone who understands the process involved in creating your vision.
How will you make the entertainment center fit around the existing fireplace? Is there enough space in your laundry room to add a cleaning closet? What height should the TV be in your room? How far away from the pantry doors should the custom wine rack go?
Ask questions about anything you do not understand.
Hardwood construction means understanding and working with the characteristics of the wood. We glue solid wood boards together to create panels and sides of the cabinets. Solid wood expands and contracts to adjust to the temperature and humidity fluctuations in your home. A solid wood panel can expand and contract by up to 1/4" across the width of the panel.
Each built in cabinet is unique in size and style. Our craftsmen carefully analyze the project to increase strength and stability.
Do you know that we use Grade A cabinet plywood in hidden dividers, cabinet bottoms, and back panels? The reason for this is to prevent cracks as the wood expands. We decide where to place plywood by looking for areas where the wood is surrounded on three sides, preventing it from moving.
Using plywood for these hidden cabinet sides lets the exposed, wooden face frame move without breaking or coming apart at the joints. All doors, drawers, drawer boxes, raised panels in the sides, and face frames are solid wood. We will never use particle board!
When you invest in custom cabinetry, quality drawers are a must. Our Amish craftsmen dovetail all drawers to create the most durable drawer box possible. Add undermount, soft closing slides, especially great for high traffic areas like bathroom and kitchen cabinets.
We finish our custom cabinets with a catalyzed conversion varnish. Simply put, the finish includes a hardening substance, known as a catalyst. We look for the hardest finish available that works with solid wood. This finish has enough elasticity to accommodate wood expansion and contraction without cracking or peeling.
Catalyzed conversion varnish is not for the at home DIY. You must mix the finish with the catalyst just prior to application and spray it on in thin coats. In contrast, thicker, polyurethane finishes are easier for woodworkers to apply at home. We must also control the finish environment at our manufacturing facility to avoid dust particles in the air.
While the catalyzed conversion varnish is the most durable option available, it is not indestructible. This wonderful option guarantees that your glass won't leave a water ring if it sweats. Heat resistant to 220 degrees Fahrenheit, you have no worries about white steam spots from your dinner plate or coffee cup.
Prevent scratches in the wood and finish by avoiding dishes with rough, stoneware type bottoms. And NEVER set cardboard boxes on the tabletop! After setting in trucks and on gritty sidewalks, boxes are prone to leave scratches in your wood tops.
At Dutch Craft Furniture, our team has years of experience in furniture sales, design, carpentry, and cabinet installation. We are happy to talk though every angle of the process! For more information on custom built in cabinets for your home, contact us today.
]]>With so many options and styles available, figuring out where to start can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of five common questions about perfect bedroom layouts, along with helpful tips and advice to guide you in the right direction. Let’s dive in!
It’s important to maximize your space and make it feel as open and airy as possible if you have a small bedroom. Sleeping in a place that feels cluttered and cramped can be challenging.
Placing the bed against a wall and leaving enough room for a small nightstand on either side is one popular option. Nightstands are great because they provide extra storage without taking up a lot of space. You can place your books, a lamp, and water glass in this area for easy access.
This layout will give you ample space to move around and create an uncluttered look. Using a storage bed with built-in drawers or shelves is another option that can help you save even more space. This additional storage gives extra pillows, blankets, and seasonal clothes a place to hide without taking up space.
It’s important to consider the placement of your furniture to create a cozy and comfortable bedroom. Start by placing the bed in the center of the room, with a rug underneath for added warmth and texture. Add soft, plush pillows and blankets to make the bed inviting. Consider adding a reading nook or small seating area near a window, where you can curl up with a good book or enjoy your morning coffee.
Your bedroom is your sanctuary, a place where you can retreat from the noise, relax, and recharge in the hustle and bustle of life. Creating a cozy bedroom isn’t just about aesthetics; it profoundly impacts your well-being. A well-planned, comfortable bedroom can help reduce stress and anxiety, promote better sleep, and nurture and comfort you.
Think of your bedroom as a personal haven filled with the things you love—comfortable bedding, soothing colors, your favorite books, and cherished mementos. It’s a space that should reflect your personality and cater to your needs, enhancing your overall quality of life. Our dedicated team at Dutch Craft Furniture is here to help you create that perfect, cozy space that resonates with comfort, harmony, and style.
The ideal layout for a primary bedroom will depend on your preferences and needs. However, a popular option is to have the bed centered on one wall with nightstands on either side. This common preference allows easy access to the bed from both sides and creates a symmetrical, balanced look.
Consider adding a sitting area or vanity in the room for added luxury. Find comfortable chairs that will allow you to curl up with a good book or magazine at the end of a long day. And don’t forget about storage—incorporating built-in closets or using furniture pieces with hidden storage can help keep your main bedroom clutter-free.
Efficient storage solutions can make a significant difference in the usability and aesthetic appeal of every bedroom. Utilize the space beneath your bed by adding storage boxes or a bed frame with integrated storage compartments. Consider investing in a multi-purpose furniture piece, such as a storage bench or ottoman, to provide both seating and storage options.
Don’t overlook vertical space—tall, slender dressers or shelving units can add ample storage without taking up too much floor space. Built-in wardrobes or closets are another great option, providing a sleek and seamless way to store your belongings.
Finally, consider using the corners of your room for additional storage, with corner shelves or cabinets. At Dutch Craft Furniture, we offer a range of customizable storage solutions that you can tailor to your specific needs, helping you create a bedroom that’s both beautiful and functional.
It’s important to consider style and function when choosing furniture for your bedroom. Look for pieces that look beautiful and serve a purpose. For example, a storage bed can help save space while adding to the room’s overall design.
Also, think about the materials and finishes—hardwood furniture is durable and timeless, while soft fabrics and textures can add warmth and comfort. Don’t be afraid to mix and match styles to create a unique, personalized look that reflects your personality. Our knowledgeable sales staff at Dutch Craft Furniture is here to assist you every step of the way if you need help with design ideas or custom pieces.
Creating the perfect bedroom is a delightful journey beyond aesthetics and dives into comfort, functionality, and personal taste. Here are the top pieces to consider including in your bedroom to make it a sanctuary of relaxation and tranquility.

Don’t forget about the bedroom furniture. Search for quality dressers, bedside tables, and bed frames to fill the guest room. Dutch Craft offers incredible, high-quality Amish bed frames that are perfect for the space.
No one likes living out of a suitcase, so make sure to provide ample storage space for your guests. Clear out some closet space, and provide plenty of hangers for their clothes. Add a dresser or chest of drawers so that your guests can store their belongings out of sight.
Make your guests feel at home by adding a few personal touches to the room. Consider adding some family photos, books, or artwork to the walls. You can also provide a small basket of snacks or toiletries as a welcoming gesture.
If your guests need to do some work during their stay, make sure to provide a workspace. Add a desk and chair or create a small office nook if space is limited. Provide a lamp, pens, paper, and other office supplies.
Good lighting is essential for a comfortable and functional guest bedroom. Ensure you provide a bedside lamp for reading and ambient lighting for general use. Add some curtains or blinds to the windows to control the amount of natural light in the room.
Creating a guest bedroom that visitors will love doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. You can create a space your guests will look forward to. With a little effort, you can make your guests feel welcome and at home during their stay.
]]>The size of your new dresser will depend on your storage needs and the dimensions of your room. You don’t want to buy a large dresser if you have a small room or a small dresser if you have a lot of clothes to store. When choosing a new dresser, select one with enough storage space to accommodate the number of clothing items you have. It’s often better to choose a larger dresser than a smaller one so that you have room to grow.
Your dresser should complement the style of your bedroom, so choose a dresser that’s in the same style or one that complements it. If you have a traditional bedroom, pick a dresser with a classic or antique style. If you have a modern bedroom, go with a sleek dresser. The dresser’s color should also complement the color of your bedroom walls and furniture.
The quality of your dresser is essential for durability and longevity. You want a dresser made of high-quality materials. It should also have a sturdy construction to withstand everyday use. Look for dressers of solid hardwood, such as oak or maple, and check the drawer construction and the quality of the hardware used. You can always trust the Amish bedroom dressers from Dutch Craft Furniture to have the durability and quality you crave.
Your budget is also essential when buying a new dresser. You don’t want to overspend on a new dresser, but you also don’t want to buy a cheap one that won’t last long. Set a budget that works for you and stick to it when shopping for a dresser. You can also look for dressers with discounts or sales to save some money.
Before buying a new dresser, consider where you’ll place it. You want to ensure that your new dresser fits in the designated location and that there’s enough clearance to open the drawers fully. Consider the room’s dimensions, and choose a dresser that fits perfectly in the designated space.
Buying a new dresser requires some consideration and attention to detail. You want a dresser that’s the right size, style, quality, and budget. Considering these factors, you can find the perfect dresser that meets your storage needs and complements your bedroom’s overall design. Choose a high-quality dresser made of durable materials that can withstand everyday use, and don’t be afraid to spend a little more to get one that’ll last for years.
]]>Oak wood is a popular choice for Amish furniture makers because of its strength and durability. Oak has a coarse texture and can vary in color based on the region and soil conditions where it was grown. Amish furniture making uses two distinct types of oak: red and white. Red oak is slightly warmer in color than white oak and has a pronounced grain pattern. On the contrary, white oak has a more uniform grain pattern and often displays rays or light streaks in the wood. White oak is often quartersawn, which is especially popular in Mission style furniture.
Maple is a very popular wood type among Amish furniture-makers. It has a subtle grain pattern and is typically light in color. However, its smooth texture makes it a great option for painting or staining, allowing you to customize your furniture to your taste.
Another common wood used in Amish furniture making is cherry wood. Cherry has a beautiful, warm reddish-brown color and a smooth texture. Its rich aesthetic makes it a popular choice for statement pieces in the home. It is also known for its ability to darken over time, which gives it a unique and distinguished look.
Elm has a distinct, feathery grain texture that craftsmen highlight when they apply a stain. They commonly use it in 2-tone pieces along with maple wood, providing a beautiful contrast with its smooth grain.
Walnut is another lesser-known option when it comes to Amish furniture making. On the pricer end of the spectrum, walnut is the most common choice for furniture made with live edge slabs. With its naturally dark, grayish-brown tones, most craftsmen do not stain this wood type, they only apply a clear finish.
Hickory wood may be the answer for those looking for a more rustic aesthetic. Hickory is a very hard, dense wood with a dramatic grain pattern. Homeowners who enjoy this type of wood also enjoy log cabin-style furniture. You can also combine it with other woods for a more unique look. It is important to note that hickory is a more difficult wood to work with than others, so pieces made from hickory may be pricier.
The type of wood you choose for your Amish furniture can greatly impact the final look and feel of the piece. Understanding the characteristics of each wood type can help you make an informed decision that will ensure your furniture will last for years to come. No matter which type you choose, you can rest assured that you are choosing investment pieces that will last a lifetime, thanks to the high-quality craftsmanship of Amish furniture makers.
At Dutch Craft Furniture of Berlin, we use only the highest quality materials in our Amish bedroom sets, dining room tables, living room sets, and more, ensuring our customers receive the best possible end product. Check out all our Amish furniture options today!

Lighting plays a huge role in setting the tone for your dinner party, so consider installing ambient lighting that complements your kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting is perfect for illuminating countertops, and pendant lights can provide a soft glow over the dining table.
Investing in high-quality appliances can make a big difference in how easy and stress-free your dinner party is. Make sure you have a refrigerator and freezer that are spacious enough to store all your ingredients without causing crowding. A powerful oven is also crucial for cooking your dishes quickly and thoroughly. A dishwasher will be your go-to for cleanup, and a wine cooler can keep your vintages fresh and ready to pour.

]]>Veneer pieces consist of thin layers of wood glued together to create a real wood look, without using solid wood. The outer layer is wood, and the underlying layers come from inexpensive materials such as particleboard. As a result, veneer furniture can be less expensive, depending on the retailer. Veneer furniture also comes in many styles, finishes, and colors.
Solid wood furniture consists entirely of real wood and is often more expensive than veneer furniture. However, it is also higher quality and more durable. Solid wood furniture can last for generations when properly cared for. Solid wood furniture also comes in various styles, finishes, and textures.
Solid wood furniture has a huge advantage over veneer furniture when it comes to durability. Solid wood furniture is less prone to damage, such as scratches, dents, or heat damage. Since it consists entirely of wood, it is more resistant to wear and tear. A huge benefit to solid wood is, if there is a deep scratch or accidental chip in your furniture, it can be completely strip sanded and refinished to be as good as new. Veneer furniture, on the other hand, is more susceptible to damage, and irreparable if scratches, nicks, and dings get through the thin top layer.
Both veneer and solid wood furniture require regular cleaning with a mild soap and water to keep them looking their best. Solid wood requires less maintenance since the screws used to assemble drawer slides, door hinges, and hardware stay stronger and more solid when embedded into solid wood versus veneer with its particle board core.
The cost of furniture is a big consideration for many homeowners. Veneer furniture is sometimes more affordable than solid wood furniture because of its inexpensive material makeup. However, solid wood furniture is a better investment in the long run because it is more durable and long-lasting. You should consider investing in veneer furniture if you want to save money. Otherwise, solid wood furniture is the better choice if you want furniture that will last for years to come.
Homeowners should know that the differences between veneer and solid wood furniture come down to their preferences on design, functionality, and budget. Solid wood is a high quality, preferred, natural material to use for furniture, but it cannot be conformed to accommodate all designs and functions. Veneer furniture is a good option if you want lower cost furniture that looks great. But solid wood furniture is the way to go if you want furniture built to last. Ensure you take care of your furniture so it will last for years, whichever you choose.

]]>Don’t worry. We’re here to help make the process easier. As furniture experts, we have some helpful tips on furnishing your first home to reflect your style and make it feel cozy and inviting. So, sip on a cup of coffee or tea, and read on for our top furnishing tips.
These basics include a bed, sofa, dining table and chairs, and storage solutions. These are the items you will be using the most in your daily life, so make sure to invest in quality, functional, and comfortable pieces. It’s also important to consider your living space and its layout when choosing furniture sizes and styles.
The essentials are where you’ll want to spend most of your budget. Invest in solid furniture you know will last. For example, Amish furniture is an excellent option. Quality Amish kitchen chairs, tables, bed frames, and dressers will last for generations.
Gone are the days when all furniture pieces had to match perfectly. Mixing and matching different styles can add character and personality to your home. Just stick with a cohesive color palette or theme to tie everything together.
For example, pairing a modern sofa with vintage accent chairs can create an eclectic yet stylish look. Mixing different textures like leather and velvet can add visual interest to a space.
It’s important to consider your lifestyle and how you will use each piece when choosing furniture. For example, having a white fabric sofa that stains easily may not be practical if you have pets or young children.
Similarly, investing in a larger dining table or comfortable seating options is a must if you love to entertain. Think about your daily routines and activities, and choose furniture that will fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.
Is your home a smaller space? Don’t let that limit your furnishing options! Look for multi-functional pieces that suit your aesthetic.
For example, a storage ottoman can double as a coffee table and provide extra seating. A sofa bed is perfect for accommodating guests while saving space in your home office or spare room. An incredible number of multi-functional furniture pieces are available.
Homeowners often overlook lighting when furnishing a home, but it can make all the difference in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Make sure to have a mix of natural and artificial lighting in each room and different types of light sources, such as overhead fixtures, and table and floor lamps. These fixtures and light sources will allow you to adjust the amount of light in each room based on your needs and mood.
Lighting is not just about visibility; it’s an essential element that influences your home’s mood, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Start by evaluating the natural light that pours into your rooms. Position your furniture to take advantage of this natural luminescence. For instance, place your reading chair near a window or your dining table near a source of ambient light.
Layer your lighting by including a mix of ambient, task, and accent lights.
Don’t shy away from using different lighting styles and fixture colors. A well-chosen light fixture can become a stylish focal point or even serve as a piece of art. Consider dimmable lights for spaces like the living room or bedroom, where you’ll want to adjust the brightness according to time and mood.
Lastly, remember to choose energy-efficient LED bulbs. They help save on electricity bills and come in various color temperatures, allowing you to create the perfect ambiance for every room. So, while embarking on your home furnishing journey, let lighting lead the way to a cozy, comfortable, and charming space.
Your home reflects you, so don’t be afraid to embrace your style. Choose furniture that speak to your taste and personality, whether modern and minimalistic or cozy and eclectic.
Don’t feel pressured to follow trends or stick to a certain aesthetic. Mix and match different styles, colors, and patterns to create a unique and personalized space you will love coming home to every day.
Furnishing your first home can be overwhelming, so don’t rush it. Take your time to find the right pieces that fit your budget and personal style. Don’t feel like you must fill every room with furniture immediately.
Instead, start with the essentials and gradually add new pieces as you go. This slow pace will help you stay within your budget and get a feel for how you want each room to look and function. Remember, it’s okay to take things slow and make changes as you go.
Feeling stuck when decorating or furnishing a certain room? Look for inspiration online through design blogs and social media. You can also visit furniture stores to see different styles and get ideas for your home.
Keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know; you may find a unique piece or design idea that you never would’ve thought of before.
Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about how to furnish your home! Talk to friends and family who have recently gone through the process, or hire a professional interior designer for expert advice.
Not only can they provide valuable insight and ideas, but they can also help you stay within your budget and make the most out of your space.

]]>In woodworking, the term live edge refers to a thick slice of wood cut across the profile of the tree without removing its outer rings. These untouched edges result in tabletops still displaying the character, shape, and bark of the tree.
In the United States, black walnut trees grow mainly throughout the Midwest and South regions, preferring rich coves and well drained bottomland. Soil chemistry and the region from which the tree is harvested leaves its mark on the final color and texture of the wood. Our craftsmen partner with a local tree removal service, on the lookout for walnut being cleared, mostly from along fence rows. Trees from along these open fence rows, being more exposed to the elements, have far greater character than walnut trees harvested from protected areas in forests.
After being slabbed at the sawmill to 2” thick, the slabs need to dry. They are sent to the kiln to ensure longevity, durability, and a meticulous drying process, which takes months. Here, they attain a specific moisture content that safeguards against instability, warping, and cracking, laying the foundation for a piece that will stand the test of time. After being dried, we seal and varnish the slabs using a catalyzed conversion varnish. This creates a heat and water-resistant finish, making the slab ready to be used in the home.
The most common large piece we use our walnut slabs for is a dining room table. They are simply stunning as a large 6’-10’ table, even longer if you have the space for it. Most often we pair them with a locally welded metal base of some kind, although there are custom wood bases available as well. Offices and conference rooms often use these live edge slabs as workspaces as well and smaller slabs add interest as bench seats, sofa tables and coffee bars.
Slabs are different than the rest of our furniture because of the uniqueness of each individual slab. We prefer to stock a variety of sizes and styles for you to come in and pick the exact piece used in your furniture. Style options include a solid slab, exactly as it sounds, a single piece cut from the tree. Also available is a book match style slab, which is a set of two slabs cut from the same tree, glued, and joined together creating a mirror image of the grain, and looking much like an open book. Finally, we offer glued up live edge slabs, which may be 4-6 pieces joined together, still displaying the bark and live edge along the outer most edges.
Now that you have this beautiful piece in your home, how should you care for it? Much like any other piece of wood furniture, keep it from extreme humidity and temperature fluctuations. Clean it using only a mild soap and water, no polishes or waxes. The natural color of the slab may change slightly as it ages and exposure to sunlight heightens the honey blonde tones in the wood.
At Dutch Craft, our commitment to the art of live edge slab dining tables is a celebration of nature's beauty and a testament to the skilled artisans that shape it. As you invite these pieces into your home, you're not just acquiring furniture; you're welcoming a story and a piece of the natural world that promises to captivate and intrigue for generations.

Choosing a theme is the first step in creating your ideal man cave or bonus room. A theme will set the tone for the room and give you direction for decorating. For example, you could choose a sports-themed room and incorporate your favorite team’s colors if you are a sports fan. A movie theater-themed room could be your go-to if you are a movie buff. Make sure the room speaks to your personality and interests, whatever you choose.
Make sure to prioritize comfort when designing your space. You will want to relax and unwind in this room, so invest in comfortable seating and furniture. Dutch Craft Furniture creates stylish, comfortable, solid Amish bar stools perfect for this space.
You could even add a cozy rug or some throw pillows to add to the comfort factor. These comfy additions create a space you’ll never want to leave.
No man cave or bonus room is complete without some entertainment options. Consider a TV mounted on the wall, a pool table, a dartboard, or a gaming console. Adding these things to the room will give you and your guests hours of entertainment and fun.
Consider adding a bar to your new space to store your favorite beverages. This area could be simple: a mini-fridge stocked with your favorite beverages or a bar with a bartending station. Having a bar area in your man cave or bonus room will be perfect for entertaining guests or just relaxing with a drink after a long day.
Finally, make the space yours by adding personal touches. Hang your favorite posters or artwork on the walls, or add a few photos of your favorite memories. Adding personal touches to your new space will make it feel more welcoming and reflect your personality.
Creating your ideal man cave or bonus room can transform your empty room into your new favorite spot. You can create a space that reflects your interests and personality with a pinch of creativity and effort. So, don’t let that empty room go to waste any longer, and start planning your dream man cave or bonus room today.
]]>Ahead is your guide to buying dining room sets and comparing options based on style, material, size, and price. Let's help you find the perfect match that will reflect your style and cater to your practical needs.
Let’s look into the different types of dining room furniture available. From solid wood dining room sets to upholstered, stylish sets, your dining room will feel elevated and sophisticated.
Wood dining room sets are a timeless choice that imbues warmth and elegance into your dining space. At Dutch Craft Furniture, we use only hardwoods such as red and white oak, maple, cherry, and walnut for our furniture. All our Amish dining sets can be built in any of these wood species, and prices vary by wood type.
Hardwoods offer durability and intricate grain patterns, making them ideal for an investment piece. Oak and hickory have a prominent grain texture, adding a relaxed, farmhouse appeal and hide scratches and knicks from daily wear and tear. Warm gray and brown stain colors look beautiful as they showcase the color variations in the wood. The subtle grain texture of maple and cherry adds a touch of class. Darker stain colors on maple and cherry shine in formal settings, while lighter tones add warmth without dominating the space.
Upholstered dining room sets offer a blend of comfort and style, transforming your dining area into a sophisticated gathering space. They feature chairs with padded seats and backs, covered in fabrics ranging from sumptuous velvet to durable leather or even easy-to-clean synthetic materials. Design choices are virtually limitless, with a wide array of colors, patterns, and textures available to match any interior style.
The added padding offers enhanced comfort, making upholstered sets a perfect choice for those long, leisurely meals with family or friends. However, they may require more maintenance than non-upholstered sets, especially in homes with children or pets. Spot cleaning or professional upholstery cleaning may be necessary to keep the fabric looking fresh and vibrant over time. When opting for an upholstered dining set, it's worth considering a balance between aesthetics, comfort, and practicality.
Custom dining room sets make a statement, allowing you to tailor your dining space to your preferences and needs. Here at Dutch Craft, it is important to recognize that choosing the size, wood, stain color, and fabric is NOT considered custom. These are all standard options of having a dining room set handcrafted by our Amish craftsmen. While many of our most popular colors and sizes are in stock for pickup today or delivery within a few weeks, having a set made to order will usually have an 8–12-week lead time.
We also encourage completely custom orders, where you can bring us inspiration from Pinterest, a sketch you hand drew, or any other vision you may have. This requires a conversation with a member of our team to discuss the details and construction.
This flexibility can benefit those with specific spatial constraints or unique interior design themes. However, it's essential to note that custom dining sets typically come at a higher cost than ready-made options due to the additional labor and materials involved in their manufacture. But for those who value a truly personalized space or have specific needs, a custom dining set can be a worthwhile investment.
Now that you know more about different dining options, here are some tips for buying dining room sets and determining what’s right for you. Proper planning, measuring, and budgeting can help make dining set shopping significantly easier.
Before you embark on your search for the perfect dining room set, it's crucial to measure your space accurately. This will ensure your new furniture fits comfortably and harmoniously within the room. Start by measuring the length and width of your dining area, noting down the dimensions. Remember to consider the clearance space for chairs—typically, you'll want to allow at least three feet from the edge of your table to the wall or any other furniture so guests can easily move in and out of their seats.
A handy tip is to use painter's tape to map out the size of the potential dining set on your floor, giving you a visual sense of how much space it will occupy. Taking the time to measure your space properly will save you from potential fit issues down the line and aid in finding a dining set that enhances the proportions and flow of your room.
Choosing quality materials for your dining room set is crucial, as it directly affects the durability, aesthetics, and maintenance of your furniture. Solid wood is a traditional and high-quality choice known for its longevity and classic appeal. Options like oak, walnut, or hickory are hard-wearing and can withstand daily use.
At Dutch Craft Furniture, a very important feature is the expanding tabletops. All our dining tables have the option of added leaves. Most tables self-store the leaves right inside and open easily with gear driven slides, allowing a person to expand the table by yourself. A standard six-person table can easily open to seat 10-12 when it’s your turn to host the holidays.
When choosing your dining room set, balancing comfort and style is paramount. The dining room is where people come together—not just for meals, but for meaningful conversations and bonding. Therefore, the chairs should look appealing and provide the requisite comfort for extended periods of sitting.
You could consider chairs with contoured backs and seats or opt for upholstered chairs with ample padding. The style of the dining set should complement your existing interior decor. Regardless of the style chosen, ensure it brings joy and adds character to your home while also providing a comfortable dining experience.
Longevity and durability are key factors when purchasing a dining room set. Since it’s a significant investment, you want to ensure that your chosen set withstands the test of time and daily use. This is where the choice of material comes into play. For instance, hardwoods like oak, hickory, or walnut are resistant to wear and tear and can serve you for years or even generations.
Also, consider the construction quality of the set. Features such as reinforced joints, sturdy hardware, and high-quality finishes can contribute significantly to the overall durability of your dining set. Investing in durability and longevity now could save you from frequent replacements and repairs.
Buying a dining room set is an exciting yet important task that requires thoughtful consideration. It's more than just selecting a beautiful piece—it's about finding an option that combines aesthetics with function, durability, and comfort. At Dutch Craft Furniture, our Amish dining room sets create a warm ambience for special events, celebrations, or family dinners with handcrafted, quality materials. Ask us about our furniture today.
]]>Over time, we accumulate many things we love or admire, making our bedrooms look cluttered and disorganized. So, decluttering your bedroom is the first step to transforming it into a sanctuary.
Take some time to remove any items you don’t need or use, as these can create visual clutter and make it difficult to relax in the space. Consider donating or selling items that you no longer need and be sure to store any important documents or items elsewhere. Once you’ve removed, donated, and thrown away things that have no use in your home, you’ll feel a sense of relief. Upgrading to a bed with drawers built into the base allows you to add storage without adding more furniture, helping to open the space.
Investing in quality bedding can go a long way toward making your bedroom feel like a sanctuary. Choose comfortable and inviting bedding, such as soft sheets and blankets, fluffy pillows, and an attractive comforter or duvet cover.
Taking the time to choose high-quality bedding will ensure you have a comfortable space for restful sleep each night. Explore various patterns, colors, and textures to transform your bed into your bedroom’s focal point, from 100% Egyptian cotton to natural bamboo bedding.
Did you know that lighting can play a considerable role in influencing your room’s mood? Soft lighting is essential for creating a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom sanctuary. Consider our Belmont Bed with dimmable LED lights, allowing you to adjust the brightness depending on the time of day or mood you’re trying to create.
You could also add some candles or string lights around your room for extra ambient lighting when needed. You can choose from tea candles, wood-wick candles, timer candles, and more to perfectly fit your desired ambiance.
There’s something tranquil about the natural world and its beauty that creates a sense of familiarity and calming energy. Adding elements of nature into your bedroom is an easy way to make it feel like a sanctuary.
Try adding plants such as succulents, air plants, or even larger houseplants if you have enough space. You could also hang some art pieces featuring natural scenes, such as forests or beaches, or pin or glue beautiful leaves, seashells, and pebbles to a corkboard, creating a collage you can hang.
Using calming colors throughout your bedroom can help to create a peaceful atmosphere in the space. Neutral colors such as whites, grays, tans, and blues are all great options for creating this effect without overwhelming the senses.
Try using muted versions of other colors, such as sage green or lavender, if neutral colors aren’t quite what you had in mind. You can also play around with pastel colors that allow you to use bright colors without being too vibrant, such as blues, purples, pinks, yellows, reds, and more.
While open walls create a minimalist look, it can sometimes feel boring and uninspired. Hanging artwork on your walls is another great way to transform your bedroom into a sanctuary-like space!
Choose artwork that speaks to you personally; it doesn’t have to be expensive artwork either, just something that brings you joy when looking at it! These pieces will add personality and character to your room while keeping the space’s calming vibe.
Adding comforting textures throughout your bedroom will help make it feel cozy and inviting, perfect for creating a true sanctuary-like atmosphere! Try incorporating different fabrics, such as velvet cushions on chairs, sofas, and beds, or adding fur rugs and throw blankets. An upholstered bench at the foot of the bed adds functionality and style. You can also drape sheer curtains over windows, hang tapestries, and more; all these small touches will bring out your bedroom’s cozy vibes.
Instead of living life in silence, soft, ambient music can do wonders for your mood. Playing soft music in your bedroom is another great way to make it feel like a haven away from everything outside its walls.
Make sure the music is soothing so it doesn’t disrupt your peace, whether it’s classical music you’re playing softly through speakers, spa music you’re listening to via your headphones while lying down, or the gentle notes you play on your guitar. The goal is to create tranquility using the elements within the room itself.
Creating an area dedicated solely to relaxation within your bedroom can really help take things up a notch when transforming it into an oasis. This relaxation space could include yoga mats, meditation cushions, and bookshelves filled with your favorite books, magazines, and more.
You can also get comfy furniture like bean bags and fuzzy chairs or add aromatherapy diffusers and essential oils. Whatever makes you feel relaxed and at ease when entering this special part of your haven.
Lastly, incorporating your favorite scents within your haven can help set the tone when you’re getting ready for bed or needing an ultimate escape from reality. Experiment with different scents that can positively impact your mood. You can choose energizing, brightening scents like orange, citrus, rosemary, and eucalyptus or calming, soothing scents like vanilla, sandalwood, sage, and mint. You can switch out scents every few weeks to keep the mood unique and to your current energy level.
Remember not to overpower your senses by using several scents simultaneously. Choose to burn incense sticks or candles or spray your linens with a fabric-safe blend before crawling into bed each night.
Look no further than Dutch Craft Furniture if you want to transform your bedroom into your dreamscape. ]]>Before implementing a care routine, you must know what kind of wood you’re dealing with. Hardwoods, such as maple, oak, and walnut, are durable and resistant to wear and tear.
Softwoods like cedar, pine, and spruce require more attention because they are prone to collecting dents and scratches. Knowing the wood type of your furniture helps you understand its nature. At Dutch Craft Furniture, all products are made with hardwoods, including painted items. We do not use soft wood.
Moisture is wood’s number one enemy. It destroys the structural integrity and leads to warping and rotting. To eliminate damage from moisture, avoid placing your furniture in damp and humid spaces, such as the basement or bathroom. Instead, place them in spaces with average temperatures, low humidity, and good ventilation. In case of accidental spills on your furniture, our catalyzed conversion varnish is guaranteed against water rings and moisture spots.
Cleaning removes dirt, dust, and oils that may accumulate on the surface of your furniture, leading to discoloration. Clean your wooden furniture regularly using a clean, soft cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristle brush attachment.
Avoid using abrasive cleaners or chemicals that can leave marks on the wood surface or damage the finish. We recommend cleaning with Murphy’s Oil Soap, vinegar or Dawn dish soap and water. Here’s another expert tip for wood preservation: clean the furniture’s undersides to get rid of accumulated dust and spider webs.
Sunlight is a natural source of heat and light. Trees need it to survive, but it’s not so beneficial for wooden furniture. Direct exposure to sunlight damages the furniture finish, accelerates fading, and exposes the wood to drying and cracking. Limit your furniture’s exposure to sunlight by using curtains and blinds or placing the furniture away from windows.
Dutch Craft Furniture specializes in handcrafted Amish furniture for lovers of traditional décor and high-quality construction. Our Amish dining chairs, including the Arlington, Belmont, and Hudson, add sophistication and coziness to any arrangement. Contact us about our craft furniture today!
]]>However, designing the perfect dining room layout can create challenges, especially if you don’t know where to start. Here are some practical dos and don’ts to consider when designing your ideal dining room layout.
The first thing you need to consider when designing your dining room layout is the room’s size. Measure the space and determine the optimal dining table, chairs, and furniture layout.
Choose furniture that is proportionate to the size of your room. Consider a round table instead of a rectangular table for dining rooms that are square-shaped. Consider one of our 36x48 tables that seat four people comfortably and can self-store two leaves to expand to 36x72 (seating six to eight people) when hosting the family in a small dining space. The options are endless for large spaces and open floor plans! We build tables that can expand with leaves to accommodate 16-20 people.
Lighting is an important aspect of any dining room layout. Make sure your dining area is well-lit to create an inviting atmosphere.
Consider installing a dimmer switch to adjust the lighting in the room to suit different occasions. Hang a chandelier or pendant light fixture above the table to create a focal point and add a touch of elegance to the room.
The dining table and chairs are the centerpiece of your dining room. Choose a dining table that fits the shape and size of your room and your decor style. Flooring also plays a part. In spaces with wood plank floors, having some contrast is important. The subtle grain of Maple wood or a painted base on the table contrast nicely if the floor features a prominent wood grain.
Our Amish table styles are classics. Adding a medium to dark stain will add elegance to your space, especially if you choose a pedestal table with some style. Go with a simple style in a light wood stain, maybe with a painted base, for a modern farmhouse appeal. You can’t go wrong with a stunning Live Edge walnut slab with a handcrafted metal base for a sleek, modern design. Ensure your dining chairs are comfortable and functional. Upholstered chairs add comfort and texture to the room, while wooden chairs offer durability and class. Our wooden chairs feature steam bent slats in the back for support and comfort.
Many homeowners overlook their storage needs when designing a dining room layout. However, having adequate storage in your dining room is essential to keep the space organized.
Consider adding a buffet table, sideboard, or hutch to store your dinnerware, linens, and other dining room essentials. The storage pieces should be proportionate to the size of your dining room and match your decor style. We can customize any hutch or buffet to match your table, including wood, color, and any distressing or beveled edge of your tabletop. Add wine storage, lights, pullout serving trays, or silverware inserts to fully optimize the way you gather.
Finally, accessorize your dining room to add personality and style. Add a centerpiece to your dining table, such as a vase of fresh flowers or a fruit bowl.
Place a rug under the dining table to anchor the space and add texture. Hang a piece of artwork or a mirror on the wall to create interest and reflect natural light.
Designing your ideal dining room layout can feel overwhelming, but don’t let the process dampen your creativity. At Dutch Craft Furniture, we offer beautiful Amish dining tables that add a classic, sophisticated ambiance to your dining room area. Contact us today if you have questions about our furniture.
]]>If you're in the market for a new dining table, consider one with leaves for its various benefits. Here’s what to expect from dining tables with leaves and why they might be the perfect addition to your home.
One of the most significant benefits of dining tables with leaves is their ability to expand and provide additional seating. Whether you host large family gatherings or dinner parties, having more space for guests is always a good thing. With a leaf extension, you can accommodate more people at the dining table without investing in a second table or cramming everyone at a too-small table. With every 2–12” leaf you add, you will be able to add another person on each side of the table!
Dining tables with leaves offer convenience on a day-to-day basis. You can adjust the table size to fit your needs, whether you’re having a weekday dinner with your partner and kids or hosting a big holiday celebration.
Adding or removing leaves enables you to enjoy the perfect space for any occasion. This adaptability can also save space in your home, which is especially useful if you have limited square footage and only one table for eating and entertaining.
The general rule of thumb is any table 12” longer than it is wide will also be able to self-store the leaves underneath the top. For round or square tables, the leaf will be hinged and fold in half for storage. No more storing leaves under the bed! A 42”x72” table can store up to 4’ worth of leaves underneath the top! We use a gear slide extension to make it easy for one person to add leaves.
Another benefit of dining tables with leaves is their versatility in design. You can find them in various styles and finishes, which means they can work well with any home décor. Choose an expandable dining table that fits your style, be it traditional or modern! Unlike other furniture pieces that are difficult to blend with existing décor, you can easily adjust dining tables with leaves to your surroundings.
While dining tables with leaves can be more expensive than other types, they offer greater value for your money. You'll save money in the long run by not having to purchase a larger table, and you'll enjoy the benefits of the table’s flexibility. Because expandable tables are so versatile, you can enjoy your dining table for many years!
Finally, dining tables with leaves are ideal for special occasions. For example, having extra seating is invaluable for Thanksgiving dinner or birthday celebrations. Because you won't have to spend money on a new table, you can save up for other celebratory décor while enjoying the benefits of a spacious dining table.
Dining tables with leaves provide many benefits, making them perform for all occasions. At Dutch Craft Furniture, we offer beautiful Amish dining room furniture in Ohio that amplifies your interior design. Ask us about our handcrafted Amish furniture today!
